Community Programs Advisory Committee Minutes 09/18/2012
Parks and Community Programs Advisory Committee
Meeting Minutes from 9/18/12
Meeting called by:~ Karen Jones, Chair

Note taker:~ Judy Currier

Attendees:~ Karen Jones, Lucky D’Ascanio, Janet Dye, Marylou Murphy and Judy Currier

No April meeting was held because of lack of a quorum.~ The last meeting, on May 15, was the parks tour.~ It was attended by: Dominic Sette-Ducati, Janet Dye, Marylou Murphy and Lucky.~ Matt Gilbert met the group at Plummer-Motz where they had a tour of the schools.~

FCP will be hosting a Smart Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20, which will be attended by all of the Southern Maine Directors and Programmers.~ Lucky is still serving on the NRPA program committee and will be attending the Annual Congress in October.

We are in a waiting mode on finalization of the community center.~ The Purchase & Sales Agreement with OceanView could become null and void in December, but OV will probably be back before the Council before then and there will likely be an extension.~ We do not feel that this should be a concern. The closing on the 100 Acre Wood parcel on Blackstrap has been held and this will enable the LWCF conversion to proceed with regard to the sale of the school complex.

There was no parks division report from Jay Reynolds or Jeff Mason.~ They have been mowing.~ A lot of work was done in advance of the 9/11 memorial at Legion Field.~ Janet mentioned a problem with the granite steps.~ One coach fell.~ Lucky will follow up on this and have the problem taken care of.~ New dog signs are up.~ The fence was power washed.~ Signs have been improved.~ A gazebo bench upgrade will be done with seats facing in both directions.~ A discussion was held on whether we should try to enlist volunteer help with some of these jobs, i.e. boy scouts, Key Club, etc.~ Lucky was at the first soccer day to give direction and her attendance was very much appreciated.~ Janet suggested a meeting for all of the coaches; this might be something to keep in mind for the future.~ The speed bumps are very effective as long as people do not try to drive around them.~ Matt has been working on the fields.~ There is a leak by the fountain.~

Shop Falmouth weekend will be held on Dec. 7, 8 and 9.~ We are trying to get businesses involved. ~On Dec. 7, a “Drop & Shop” will be held at Motz School, Mason Gym for kids in grades K-6 so that parents will have time to visit local stores and businesses to do their Christmas shopping.~ It was suggested that this information be sent out through the schools.~ Lucky will send the information to Janet.

There will be no change to the annual community tree lighting event.~ This will be held on Weds., December 5.

The FEF will receive a gift certificate from the town for their fall auction.

Judy reported on the success of the Community Programs for Seniors this past spring and summer.~ There were not only full vans for many of the trips, but wait list for those who still wanted to go.~ Because of the diversity of programs (Wood Island Lighthouse, Lippizan Stallions,Strawbery Banke, USCG Eagle tour, etc., there were many first time people attending the trip.

Judy’s term will be expiring with this meeting.

Next meeting:~ October 16.

Meeting adjourned at 5:30.
