EASTPORT SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
EASTPORT, MAINE
MEETING OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE
Shead High School
Tuesday, September 6, 2005
7:00 P.M.

School Committee Members Present:  Paula Bouchard, Shannon Emery, Judith Ampungan and Andrew Seeley.
School Committee Members Absent:  Dorothy Perkins
Others Present:  Superintendent Arthur Wittine, Principal Maureen Pottle, Principal Terry Lux and Edward French.

A.     Call the Meeting to Order

       Chairperson Paula Bouchard called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

B.     Adjustments to the Agenda

       The wording of item G. 1. will be changed to read, “Consideration to change five of six early release days.”

C.     Consideration of School Committee Minutes:

       To approve the Minutes of the August 2, 2005 School Committee Meeting, as Written or with Corrections, as        
        Recommended by the Superintendent of Schools.

       It was moved by Andrew Seeley, seconded buy Shannon Emery and voted 4 – 0 to approve the minutes of the August 2,
        2005, School Committee Meeting, as written.

D.  1.  Principal of Eastport Elementary School:  This report is attached.
    2.  Principal of Shead High School:  Terry Lux reported on a very successful first day for the freshman class.  (No written  
          report was submitted.)
    3.  School Committee report:  Shannon Emery reported that the flashing school lights are not working.  She also asked why  
          there is no sign for Eastport Elementary School.
    4.   Superintendent’s Report:  This report is attached.

E.      Public Participation.

        There was no Public Participation.

F.      Old Business:

        The was no old business.

G.      New Business

    1. Consideration of Changes Five of Six Early Release Days.

     It was moved by Andrew Seeley, seconded by Shannon Emery and voted 4 – 0 to change five of the six early release days for
      2005-2006

    2. Consideration of School Committee Policies:

    a. To Approve the First Reading of the Following Policies, as Written or with Corrections, as Recommended by the
         Superintendent of Schools:

        BBBDA     School Committee-Declared Vacancy Caused by Absenteeism
        BEDD        Rules of Order
        BEDI         School Committee Relations with the Media
        CBD          Superintendent’s Contract
        EBA          Chemical Hazards
        EFE          Competitive Food Sales
        GBO         Family Care Leave
        JLCD-E     Policy for Medication Administration on School Field Trips
        KDA          Public Information Program
        KDD          Media Relations

         It was moved by Judith Ampungan, seconded by Shannon Emery, and voted 4 – 0 to approve the first reading of the  
         aforementioned policies, with a revision to BEDI, School Committee Relations with the Media.

    b.  To Approve the Revisions to Policy JLCD, Administration of Medication to Students, as written or with Corrections,           as Recommended by the Superintendent of Schools.

         It was moved by Andrew Seeley, seconded by Judith Ampungan and voted 4 – 0 to approve the revisions to policy JLCD,
          Administration of Medication to Students.

    3.  To Consider the Following Bids:

    a.  Trash Removal.

     It was moved by Judith Ampungan, seconded by Andrew Seeley and voted 4 – 0 to award the trash bid to Quoddy Disposal.

     b.  Fuel Oil

     It was moved by Andrew Seeley, seconded by Judith Ampungan and voted 4 – 0 to award the fuel oil bid to Dead River.

     c.  Propane

     It was moved by Andrew Seeley, Seconded by Judith Ampungan and voted 4 – 0 to award the propane bid to Dead River.

     d.  School Bus Fuel.

     Some questions were raised on this bid and it was decided to table this item until the October Meeting.

     4. To elect Paul Theriault as Assistant Principal for 2005-2006.

     It was moved by Andrew Seeley , seconded by Judith Ampungan and voted on 4 – 0 to elect Paul Theriault as assistant
      principal for 2005-2006.

     5.  To Elect an MSBA Delegate and Alternate to the MSBA Delegate Assembly.

     It was moved by Andrew Seeley, seconded by Judith Ampungan and voted 4 – 0 to elect Paula Bouchard as MSBA delegate
      and Shannon Emery as MSBA alternate to the MSBA Delegate Assembly.

     6.  To Consider Approval of the Following Handbooks

     a.  Eastport Elementary School Student Handbook.


     It was moved by Andrew Seeley, seconded by Shannon Emery and voted 4 – 0 to approve the Eastport Elementary School
      Student Handbook.

     b.  Eastport Elementary School Staff Handbook

     It was moved by Judith Ampungan, seconded by Shannon Emery and voted  4 – 0 to approve the Eastport Elementary School
      Staff Handbook.

     c.  Eastport Elementary School Athletic Handbook

     It was moved by Andrew Seeley, seconded by Judith Ampungan and voted 4 – 0 to approve the Eastport Elementary School
      Athletic Handbook.  Judith Ampungan asked about a handbook for coaches.

      d.  Eastport High School Student Handbook

      It was moved by Andrew Seeley, seconded by Judith Ampungan and voted 4 – 0 to approve, with revision to class rank, the
       Shead High School Handbook.

      e.  Shead High School Staff Handbook.

       This item was tabled until the October meeting.

       Adjournment.

       Paula Bouchard adjourned the meeting at 8:30 p.m.
