(Motor Vehicle Registrants)
We have been experiencing some misconceptions and misunderstandings relative to Motor Vehicle Registration Fees.
Please know that the registration fee, title fee, and the sales tax fee are the same throughout the State of Maine regardless of where you register your vehicle (and these fees remain with the State). The only fee that may be different, would be the Agent Fee. As for Eastport, this fee for Re-registrations is $3.00 and $4.00 for New registrations.
However, your excise tax stays with the Town or the City where you reside and must be paid to your local office before you proceed to continue forward with your registration if you choose to go elsewhere.
Also, your excise tax is determined by the base amount of what the vehicle was worth when it was new, not what you have paid for the vehicle. This base amount remains the same and the State allows you a period of six years and sets a mil rate for us to follow. Once this hits the sixth year, that mil rate would remain the same for said vehicle.
As for a Title, the State law cites that it is required for any vehicle 1995 or newer.
The following is reflective of fees that can be expected when registering a vehicle with the City of Eastport.
Reg Registration Fee $35.00 (this will be depend on the class of registration)
Title Fee $33.00
Agent Fee
Re-Reg $ 3.00
New Reg $ 4.00
Sales Tax $ .05/on a dollar
There is a lot entailed to the processing of a registration from having the required papers to working with software programs and updates as well as adhering to the requirements of the Bureau of Motor Vehicle department.
