IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets drinking water standards and requires the disinfection of drinking water. However, when used in the treatment of drinking water, disinfectants react with naturally occurring organic and inorganic matter present in water to form chemicals called disinfection by-products (DBP's). Some people who drink water containing trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.
The Passamaquoddy Water District routinely monitors for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Testing results we received for January - March 2005 show that our system exceeds the standards, or maximum contaminant levels (MLC), for total Trihalomethanes. As of January 1st, 2004, the standard (MLC) for Total Trihalomethanes is 0.08 mg/L or 80ppb. The level of Total Trihalomethanbes over the last quarter was 0.93 mg/L or 93 ppb.
You do not need to use an alternative (e.g., bottled) water supply. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.
The problem is being resolved by use of a roughing filter, using Chlorine Dioxide and reducing the amount of chlorine in our water. Although the level of Total Trihalomethanes is over the standard (MLC), the level has been reduced since the last quarter and we expect it to be below the standard (MLC) in the next quarter.
