News & Announcements New Flood Map Appeal Period

6 September 2016

If you live in a shoreland area in Eastport you should visit City Hall to review the proposed, new floodplain maps.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will place two notices in the Calais Advertiser on or about August 24th and 31st 2016 and in the Machias Valley News Observer on or about August 25th and September 1st 2016.  Following the second notice a 90 day appeal period will begin and should end on or about 30 November 2016.

If you believe there are errors in the possible inclusion of your property in the flood plain hazard are this would be the time to appeal FEMA’s proposal.  This will be the only appeal period, by law.  However, you would be able to submit a Letter of Map Amendment at any time after, this 90 day period is the optimal time to appeal.

The proposed maps and further information can be found at the Code Enforcement office at City Hall during normal business hours.  More information can be found in the attached letter from FEMA and the following FEMA website: http://www.fema.gov/view-your-communitys-preliminary-flood-hazard-data-0~~~
