Legacy Park Accepting Granite Paver Tributes

Orders for tributes to individuals, families, businesses, pets, and
organizations to be engraved on granite pavers which will form a
pathway through Eastport's downtown seaside garden are being
accepted.  Tributes may be be for past or present memories, honors, or
simply to become part of Eastport's  new "pocket park", an area of
beauty in the heart of the town.

Each granite paver is 6" x 12" and will eventually be cemented into a
walkway through the park which will be located at 53 Water Street,
between The Commons and Fish Pier Parking Lot on a small swath of city
owned property.  Intended to become a colorful and fragrant sitting,
conversation, and waterfront viewing area, the park is a community
volunteer project.  Funding for the creation and maintenance of the
area will be through sale of the granite pavers and other larger
tribute features. Each paver is for sale for $52.75, which includes
tax. Larger tributes are presently in the planning stage.

The campaign to sell a few hundred pavers that will eventually create
the handicapped walkway through the garden will run from May 13th
through July 9th.  The park has been designed by Paula Kovecses, a
professional horticulturalist and garden designer, with technical
assistance from her husband, retired engineer, Laszlo Kovecses. The
couple has presented a design for the totally organic garden.
Bringing their expertise in permaculture plantings to the project, the
park will be a model which includes organics, some edibles, a rain
garden and seating areas in which to enjoy it all.  Signage will
introduce the plantings and provide information useful to those who
wish to duplicate parts of the garden in their own spaces.

Honoring the role of notable gardens that have graced Eastport over
the years, Dorothy "Scottie" Boyle and Jett Peterson have been named
Honorary Patrons of the Project.  A group of community volunteers will
oversee the order receipts and financial management of the project.
This group includes Donna Thayer, David Stanley, Bob Chaffee and Russ
Terry.

During the course of the project, special events will be hosted to
support and appreciate the growing interest in plantings within the
community.  Plans include Garden Walks and Talks, Listings of Gardens
of Prominence in and around Eastport, and programs offered by Paula
Kovecses through her company T.W.I.G. (The Way It Grows).  Flower
arranging programs, Edibles from the Flower Garden, Gardening For
Children, and Winter Gardens will be programs planned throughout the
two year construction expected to complete of Legacy Park.
Collaborating with other organizations, and welcoming new volunteers
will also be ongoing.

Persons may use the order form in the Quoddy Tides, on the City's
Website, and available at The Commons and Paula's Flowers.  Questions
or requests for order forms may be directed to The Commons at
207-853-4123.

Speaking for the project, volunteer Linda Godfrey said, " The project
has had positive responses from its first announcement last month.
Before we even start the campaign offering tribute granite pavers for
sale, we already have 35 orders.  People are really getting into the
spirit of the project, ordering pavers in memory of a loved one,
honoring a beloved pet dog, listing grandchildren, recalling a former
popular business, and highlighting great community efforts."

Val and Chuck Magianni, former owners of Easport's first Mexican
restaurant have purchased a granite paver to read "La Sardina Loca."
Godfrey noted, "Val penned the note 'We don't want folks to ever
forget her' on her order form.  Another creative order is for 14
pavers from  the All Souls Congregational Church in Bangor -- one
paver to honor each of the fourteen years different groups of youth in
their ASSIST- JC program have done summer fix-up projects in town.  In
fact, it will be this youth group and their advisors who will launch
the first project in Legacy Park.  The week of June 19th, the group
will create a Rain Garden on site, and do other prep work for the
park, " concluded Godfrey.
