MINUTES
of
January 14, 2014

Present: Lain Smith, Roz Diamond, Joyce Ikonnikow,  Andrea Aldana     Absent:  Fred Guidi
Non-members present:  Neil Andres, David Quinn

Key Discussion Points:

  • Minutes of November 12, 2013 meeting were approved.
  • Swap Shop:
  • Neil requested Swap Shop Proposals For Discussion draft of October 29, 2013 be sent to him for further review.  Roz will send.
  • Committee agreed to schedule meeting in Swap Shop to discuss current operations and suggestions for improvements with  Swap Shop Volunteers and interested community residents.
  • The meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 9:00 AM.
  • Lian will post a sign of the meeting at Swap Shop, along with a sign-up sheet for Volunteers planning to attend.
  • Lian, Joyce, Andrea, and Roz will attend
  • Barry Clifford, Transfer Station employee,  will be invited to attend
  • As one possibility for providing additional storage for furniture requests from service organizations, Neil mentioned that the wood shed at the Library parking lot could be re-purposed for that use.  Lian agreed to draft a letter to the BOS to request use of the shed.
  • Committee agreed it is best to close Swap Shop for a month for re-organizing and cleaning in the winter when usage is much less.  During the month of closure, Volunteer applications would be sought, volunteers would undergo training and sign Ethics Oath, operating protocols would be refined and codified, and BOS would designate community service organizations from which we would take requests for furniture.
  • Flyers:
  • Lian reported a cost of $473 for 4,000 flyers.  Neil noted he has submitted a grant for $500.  If it is awarded to Eastham, Neil will provide it to Committee to use for Flyer printing.
  • Notices will be prepared for Gate House posting about the composter revolving fund that allows residents to purchase a composter for $42.50
  • Neil will pursue acquisition for resale of Kitchen Scraps container.
  • Other:
  • Styrofoam experimental event in Barnstable County had 60-70 people show up in a 4-hour period to discard Styrofoam.  The amount filled ¼ of a trailer.  Brewster had a 40-ton dumpster that was filled to brim in 3 weeks, and weighed 280 lbs. The conclusion: not cost-effective to ship loose Styrofoam.  50/1 ratio.    Only way to make Styrofoam cost effective to ship is to densify it. David Quinn will write up event and conclusions.
  • New MA recycling acronym:  SMART – Save Money And Reuse Trash
Next Meeting Dates:
  • Meet with Swap Shop Volunteers and Residents: Wednesday, January 29, 2014, 9:00 AM, at Swap Shop
  • Recycling Committee Meeting, Tuesday, February 11, 2014, Small Conference Room
