Open Space Committee Minutes 01/27/10
MINUTES – OPEN SPACE COMMITTEE – 1-27-2010
Members present: Frank Dobek, Robert Cook, Robert Mumford, Peter Wade, Sue Haley, Stephen Smith
Members absent: Steve Gulrich
Staff Present:  Rachel Hutchinson

The minutes from 12-2-09 were moved by Mr. Mumford and seconded by Mr. Cook with the correction to change the name Sara Posa to Melissa Cryan.

The town administrator addressed the committee to inform it of a forth coming proposal by the CPC for a CPA funds purchase Tilcon/Murphy land for water shed area. She reported that it has been discussed in executive meeting and a letter is forthcoming with their decision.

Nauset High biology teacher Vall Bell will be meeting with Mrs. Hutchinson to discuss a proposal to build the community garden at the high school. Benefits are there would be water nearby, the students could work it in the spring and fall and community members could work it the summer.

A $10,000 grant was received by the town to engage in more wildfire prevention work on town land. NRO will be thinning out forest in some areas adjacent to Wiley Park. They will stay completely out of the riparian 50 foot buffer and will not clear any riparian species with in the 100 foot buffer. There was some concern about the extent of understory removal, and some further clarification provided.

The town is now requiring formal paperwork for volunteers who want to work with the town. This is holding up the woodchip project and other efforts. Mrs. Hutchinson still wants potential volunteers to contact her.

The Open Space and Recreation Plan has been approved through 2014.

The new signs have been installed at all the town open space lands.

The committee discussed the planting of some native ground cover near the entry sign at Wiley Park. They suggested we approach the Friends of 1651 to follow up on their previous interest in this idea.

Mr. Wade reviewed the annual plan and asked about some of the tasks listed for February. This led to a discussion on invasives control. The committee is considering whether to address some of these concerns this year.

The next meeting will be held on 2-24-2010 and will be at the NRO office.

Mrs. Haley made a motion to adjourn, Mr. Cook seconded and all approved. Meeting adjourned at 8:25 PM.

Recording clerk,

Suzanne Haley
