MINUTES
Open Space Committee Work Session March 28, 2007 / 7:00 pm
Eastham Police Station
Present: Glen Collins, Bob Cook, Frank Dobek, Laura Freeman, Henry Lind
Sue Haley, Sue Horton
Land Acquisition
Brackett Road/Bike Trail
Martin McDonald approached Glen recently about a piece of property that is available next to the bike trail near Bracket Road. We will investigate that as a potential open space parcel.
Fellers Property
The Fellers property is on the market again on Old Farm Lane. Discussion ensued with respect to acquiring this property for open space. The CPA has funds available for appraisals. This would be an important open space purchase.
Open Space Management Plan
Henry said the state has confirmed that they received our open space management plan and therefore we are eligible for self help funds again for qualifying open space parcels (like Fellers).
Fire Management Plan
Henry handed out the Executive Summary and accompanying maps for the Wildland Fire Protection and Preparedness Plan for Wiley Park, The Nickerson Property and Cottontail Acres. The Open Space Committee, the Fire Chief and the Selectmen now need to approve the plan to obtain the available matching funds (approx $10K) to implement the recommendations in the report. Bill Clark at the county who is running the program would like to get the plan approved as soon as possible. The full report is posted on the town website.
Open Space Committee Managed Lands Plan
Henry handed out the above mentioned plan. The timeline needs to be updated. We need to make sure the fire management plan is not at odds with our Open Space Managed Land Plan. Touching base with Dave Crary and Dennis Murley is probably a good idea.
Wiley Park Signage
Discussion ensued with respect to the large panel signs.
The Wildlife Sign: It was decided that the pictures shown should have accompanying text specific to the species shown. It would be nice if we could fit 6 – 8 pictures of the aforementioned critters on the sign. It will be a large panel sign. Bob has worked on text for various animals. Sue suggested the text needs to be big enough to hold people’s attention and the text will have to be slimmed down to the essentials as well.
(First six species in preference) Great horned owl, cavity nesting birds, red squirrel, pine warbler aquatic turtles, spring peeper, (add in species if enough room) coyote & green frog.
Henry brought the latest renditions of the other proposed large panel signs. Sue Haley volunteered to review them for grammar and verbiage for our next meeting and to make any corrections or revisions. We should coordinate with Dana for our next meeting and perhaps schedule the next meeting for two weeks.
The smaller tree Identification signs are in for pitch pine and Atlantic Cedar. Other candidates are White/Black Oak, tupelo, white pine, Shrubs species are: arrowwood, highbush blueberry, inkberry, sheep laurel, sweet pepperbush.
1651 Friends
Sue Haley has a copy of meeting minutes from the various friends of the arboretum committee meetings. Sue Horton will hold onto them for our files.
Wiley Park Graffitti
The alleged perpertrator has been identified and we are expecting restitution.
Next Meeting: April 17, 2007 late afternoon (time to be determined) at Wiley Park for a site visit then onto Town Hall.
Sue Haley moved to adjourn. Laura Freeman seconded. APPROVED: unanimously
Adjournment at 8:45p.m.
Respectfully submitted by,
Laura Freeman
