MINUTES
Open Space Committee September 28, 2005 / 7:30 pm
Present: Judy Brainerd, Glen Collins, Laura Freeman, Sue Haley, Sue Horton, Katelyn Merrill
and Dave Read.
Approval of Meeting Minutes
MOTION: Dave moved and Sue Haley seconded to approve the August 31, 2005 meeting minutes.
APPROVED.
Land Acquisition:
Harmes’s Way: Judy called Bob Prescott at the Audubon to talk about the purchase of this property. The Audubon seems interested in pursuing it.
Open Space Management:
Wiley Park Bridge & Grant Application
Judy and Katelyn have done a tremendous job on pulling together the two grant applications for the bridge and trail improvements. Sheila also spent considerable time with Judy and Katelyn with great suggestions for fine tuning the applications. The final decision for the awarding of the grants is October 3rd.
It appears as though the bridge will need a variance from the Architectural Access Review Board if it will not be handicap accessible.
Hatch Property
The Hatch property will be vista pruned to enhance the view of Depot Pond from the trail. The Conservation Commission approved the vista pruning project as long as the pruning stays more than 50 feet from the mean high water line of the pond. Americorps has sent many of their workers down south, therefore we do not have access to Americorps people at this time to complete projects like this and we may have to tap in to other sources such as the Boy Scouts, Nauset Cares etc.
Old Business:
Open Space and Management Plan
The plan continues to be worked on.
Town Website
The updated maps used in the grant application have gone up on the town website. Also, the Town Recreation page has an old Pathways Day flier listed under walking trails. This needs to be updated. The suggestion was made that we scan in the open space brochure that Keith had been working on.
New Business:
Pathways Day
The Town is sponsoring two Pathways Walks on Sunday of Columbus Day weekend. Katelyn is planning both walks. The morning walk will be along the marsh and flats of First Encounter Beach to discuss shellfishing and aquaculture. The afternoon walk and discussion “Shellfish in a nutshell” will be at the Salt Pond. Sue Haley will lead a walk after the bridge is constructed through Wiley and Nickerson.
1651 Forest
The first meeting since the new appointments will happen soon. David Hoerle is joining the committee and a chairperson is still needed.
Conservation Commission
Glen reported that the Conservation Commission has completed the Order of Conditions for the Ocean Beach and that the revetment proposals along the bayside beaches have been approved with low wall revetments and significant of beach nourishment.
Community Preservation Act Committee
Judy was inadvertently appointed to the CPA Committee as the Open Space representative. Town Hall will fix the appointment to correctly reflect that Sue Horton was nominated as our representative.
Next Meeting: Our next open space meeting will be October 12, 2005 at 7:30 pm.
MOTION: Laura made a motion to adjourn. Sue Horton seconded. APPROVED unanimously.
Adjourned at 8:45 pm
Respectfully submitted by Laura Freeman
