MINUTES
Open Space Committee August 8, 2005 / 7:30 pm
Present: Judy Brainerd, Glen Collins, Laura Freeman, Sue Haley, Sue Horton,
and Dave Read.
Approval of Meeting Minutes
MOTION: Glen moved and Dave seconded to approve the April 25, 2005 meeting minutes. APPROVED.
Land Acquisition:
Nothing new to report.
Open Space Management:
Wiley Park Bridge
The Natural Resource Department received a letter from a group of residents in the Kingsbury Road area requesting that the bridge be built to allow for kayaking underneath it. The Board of Selectmen need to be contacted for their input on the bridge design as well as the Conservation Commission.
Pathways Clean Up Day – June 4th
This years pathways project was a great success. There was a good turn out of volunteers and we hauled a
significant amount of trash out of the new Hatch property in addition to making a new trail leading off the
bike trail to a lookout area over the pond and back to the bike trail. Natural Resources will arrange for
some vista pruning at the look out area to enhance the view of the pond.
Cottontail Acres and Nickerson Properties
MOTION: Sue moved and Dave seconded putting in a request to have Americorps dedicate a day of pruning at Cottontail Acres and the Hatch property. Approved unanimously.
Discussion ensued with respect to the Nickerson property which also needs some heavy pruning performed, perhaps in early fall.
Wiley Park Doggy Bags & Signs
Doggy mitt boxes are $50 apiece. Wiley Park really needs at least one dog mitt dispenser. Discussion ensued with respect to funding sources. It was suggested that the Friends of the 1651 Forest might be able to purchase them. The signs were never ordered and there is no money for them in the budget right now.
Old Business:
Town Web Site
There are maps up on the website, but we need the updated maps with the new trails to be put up. Also, they are hard to find. There should be an easier way to access the walking trail information on the website.
Open Space and Management Plan
Katelyn and Judy have put in a lot of work on this. There is still more to add. The Natural Heritage People provided Katelyn with a lengthy report listing the endangered species in Eastham.
Fence at White Property
Katelyn replaced the dilapidated cobbed together “fence” with a section of split rail fence. It looks so much better and is a huge improvement over the previous barrier.
New Business:
Land Management Grant
Judy has information on a Land Management Grant for up to $10,000. It does require matching funds from the Town. Wiley Park is a prime candidate for this grant. The bridge and the signs project definitely qualify as a potential candidate for this grant. The application is due September 15th. Judy, Glen and Sue Haley will get together and rough out the application. Katelyn said she would be available to work on it after the upcoming Ocean Beach meeting with the Conservation Commission.
Community Preservation Act Committee Nomination
The BOS are seeking the nomination of an Open Space Committee member to be appointed to the CPA Committee. The deadline for the nomination is Wednesday. Sue Horton expressed she would be willing to attend the CPA Committee meetings.
MOTION: Laura moved and Dave seconded that Sue Horton be nominated as the Open Space Committee representative on the Community Preservation Act Committee. APPROVED: unanimously.
1651 Forest
Sue Haley was reappointed for a two year term. The Committee is back to a five person membership and will meet quarterly.
Conservation Commission
Glen reports there will be new faces on the Conservation Commission as new people will replace some of those Commissioners whose terms have expired. Glen suggested that some of the candidates that were not appointed to the Commission might be interested in joining the Open Space Committee.
Next Meeting: Our next open space meeting will be August 24, 2005 at 7:30 pm.
MOTION: Sue Horton made a motion to adjourn. Laura seconded. APPROVED unanimously.
Adjourned at 8:35 pm
Respectfully submitted by Laura Freeman
