Open Space Committee Minutes 04/27/05
 MINUTES

Open Space Committee                                    April 27, 2005 / 7:30 pm
Present:        Judy Brainerd, Glen Collins, Laura Freeman, Jeff Havlick, Sue Horton,
and Dave Read.

Approval of Meeting Minutes
MOTION: Glen moved and Dave seconded to approve the March 23, 2005 meeting minutes with the
correction under the Conservation Commission section that Glen reported the Commission expects
requests for repairs to existing revetments not requests for new revetments.          APPROVED.

Land Acquisition:
Nothing new to report.
Open Space Management:
Wiley Park Bridge
Using the design criteria that the bridge in Wiley Park should be handicap accessible and allow for kayakers and canoists to pass underneath the bridge, Laura said Schofield Brothers has identified three design options:
1.      A wooden structure which provides the necessary ramps, platforms and bridge height. This creates for an overall structure of approximately 111 feet long.
2.      A combination of a wooden structure and an earth berm to provide the slopes necessary for handicap access and the height necessary for the kayakers.
3.      A “Horse Bridge” that is level with the top of the banks and the trail, and has trapdoor section in the middle to allow for the passage of kayakers.
Judy has spoken with the PACE folks and they definitely would like the bridge to be handicap accessible.
Discussion ensued and it was decided that now would be a good time to present the options to the
Conservation Commission for their input prior to choosing a design option.
Pathways Clean Up Day – June 4th  9 – 11 am
This years pathways project will be a general clean up of the Hatch property and to layout and establish a
trail. We need to obtain a plan with property line info on it prior to the Pathways Day so we know where
to bring the new trail out onto the bike trail. The trail will provide an overlook onto Depot Pond and at a
later date, we will request permission to perform some vista pruning with the Conservation Commission.
Wiley Park Doggy Bags
Discussion ensued with respect to the recent article in the paper that Shaws and Stop & Shop are
providing doggy bags to Orleans at their beaches. Judy will contact Mr. Fuller as to who we should
contact to inquire as to whether they would be willing to donate the bags at Wiley Park.
Old & New Business:
Open Space and Management Plan
The OS Management Plan is still on Terry Whalen’s desk. Since he has left the Town Planner position, the committee decided the plan should be submitted as it is to Boston for review.
Town Web Site
We need to get the maps of the town open space parcels on-line so people may download them at home.
1651 Forest
Additional sassafras trees have been planted to replace the ones which did not survive. The supplier of the elm trees has made an offer with respect to additional elm trees which is being considered.
Conservation Commission
Glen reports there is nothing new.
New Business
The White property fence needs to be replaced. There was talk about placing a few heavy boulders at the entrance to prohibit vehicle entrance.

Next Meeting:   Our next open space meeting will be May 25, 2005 at 7:30 pm.
MOTION:         Sue Horton made a motion to adjourn. Laura seconded.  APPROVED unanimously.
Adjourned at 8:35 pm

Respectfully submitted by Laura Freeman
