Human Services Advisory Committee Minutes 10/21/08
Eastham, Massachusetts
October 21, 2008

The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Gail Hoffman at 7PM in the Large Meeting Room in Town Hall.
Present: Richard Dill, Lyn Chafetz, Elaine Lipton, Gordon Major, Mary Sedlock, Dilys Smith

After a brief “housekeeping” time, we began the evening’s interviews.

Nauset Together We Can (The Juice Bar).  Christine King and Jim Fish presented their ideas for the development of the project with Barbara Nigel of Willy’s. She has offered facilities there for Fridays and Saturdays from 6-10PM; they would like to add Thursdays after school from 3-6. They would also like to sponsor concerts on some weekend nights. They will have a separate entrance and several choices of venue within the building. This will be a new concept for them, and they are working with Sarah Burill and Wendy Allegrone, who have been very successful with youth programs in Orleans and Brewster. They are hoping to hire a director and staff of 2 in the near future. They will keep in touch with us as their program develops.

Lysette Hurge-Putnam represented Independence House once again, reporting that the programs are building successfully; more and more people are taking advantage of what they have to offer. Housing stabilization  is a big project this year for women who have had to leave their homes because of domestic violence if all attempts fail to allow them stay in their homes.  The Child Witness to Violence  program is new, providing safety planning for children 6-11, including therapy to help them relax during and after their frightening sessions. Their newest concern: teen-age children abusing their parents.

She reported that good relationships are developing with Police Departments Capewide, and that there is a new office on Cottage Road, Orleans.

Outer Cape Health Services is the largest employer on the Outer Cape according to David Hale, who represented the organization, which serves patients from Eastham to Provincetown, and beyond (80% of their load) plus summer visitors who serve as the other 20%, providing a full array of specialties, due to relationships with Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.

Improvements they are seeking: 1. Attract more physicians!  (Very hard to do here in the “country.”) 2. Establish a dental practice in P-town. 3. Increase the efficacy of their on-site pharmacy, providing a location between P-town and Orleans. They receive assistance from Medicare and other sources.

Though there have been significant cuts in Massachusetts funding, they are not skimping on providers and doctors  - they have a commitment to serve the area!

Last week’s minutes were approved as revised. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45PM.
Next meeting: October 28 at 7PM in the Small Meeting Room in Town Hall to review reports from agencies visited this season and to begin the review process.

Respectfully submitted,

Dilys Smith, Clerk
