REVIEW
Fertilizer Regulation Review and discussion
The Board of Health agreed to go with alternative A of the fertilizer regulation
The Cape Cod Commission recommendation limited nitrates
Conservation Commission doesn’t allow any nitrates
Nitrates are only for the lawn and not for agricultural purposes
It was discussed that the regulations should prohibit any use of phosphorus or nitrogen within 100ft of conservation land or protected resources. It was argued weather this would be too restrictive or would even be accepted. In other towns a 15ft setback was allotted.
Many believed that it is going to be difficult if not impossible to enforce these regulations.
The state has banned phosphorus in Massachusetts but has not banned nitrogen
The board of health felt that educating the public about the use of fertilizer and the harm is can have would be the best approach in enforcing these regulations
The Board of Health discussed whether or not to eliminate the section that states that these regulations do not apply if you are licensed in fertilization. The discussed the possibility of having any citizen that wants to use fertilizer become certified. This would ensure that these people have been educated and understand the correct protocol for using fertilizer.
The board oh health would like the input of the Conservation Commission
The next Board of health workshop will be held on October 15th at 8:30am
