Board of Health Workshop Minutes 6-8-2011
MINUTES
BOARD OF HEALTH WORKSHOP
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 2011
9AM

PRESENT:        Dr. James Taylor, Chairman, Pat Lariviere, R.N., Co-Chairman, Beverly Knox, R.N., Dr. Lois Roth-Johnson, Dr. Martin Haspel, Jane Crowley,                       M.S., R.S., Health Agent,

        I.      OPENING STATEMENTS

Dr. Jim Taylor advised that a couple of people, who are very qualified, are interested in joining the committee. This is a good sign that people are recognizing this committee as a good thing for the Town of Eastham.

Dr. Martin Haspel updated us on the testing of his water for lead.  He has had several samples sent to the county for testing and the county has advised that the test should be on water that has been standing for at least 6 hours.  He will send one more from the tank.  Dr. Haspel believes his results are false positive as others in the neighborhood are negative.  The lab he is using is not the same as the one used by Silent Spring and Jane Crowley advised that they may not be using the same EPA certified method.  Jane also explained that false positive results should always be retested and that municipal water would be required to test lead and copper.  Lead and copper testing is required frequently in public water supply wells such as schools and day cares.  Other private wells, it is not tested as frequently.

        II.     WINDMILL WEEKEND

Pat Lariviere advised that Paul Biegelsen is in charge of the green and an application is required to hold a spot for us and we should file the application ASAP.  Pat provided all with a copy of the Application.

Dr. James Taylor asked who would be available for the event to man our tent.  Pat, Jim, Beverly, Susan and Martin all agreed they would be.  Lois will check her calendar.  We should also set up a schedule of times for coverage.

Pat asked if we have a budget for this and Jane confirmed that she would check into the VNA budget to determine what we could use.

The committee then brainstormed ideas for the event which included:
·       Water testing
·       Melanoma and skin testing – Jean Roma from Medical Reserve Corporation may be able to help and Jane will check into that.
·       Medical Waste disposal
·       Septic pumping
·       Rental Guidelines – approach based on a checklist that can be handed out for information only
·       Blood pressure
·       A free raffle to draw people in
·       Safe food handling

Lois suggested setting up the booth with related items.  For example:
·       Water Quality
o       Drug disposal
o       Septic pumping and maintenance
o       Wastewater strategy
o       Water testing
o       Rental guidelines
o       Pond remediation
·       Personal Health
o       Skin testing
o       Blood pressure
o       Flu shots
o       Lyme disease (ticks)
o       Pneumonia vaccine
o       Colonoscopy
o       Mammogram

Jim recommended that we come up with some creative and catchy titles to draw as many people in as possible.  For example, for the Water Quality topics, “Protect Your Investment”.  Pat added that the overall statement could be “Your Board of Health at Work” and suggested that we put our mission statement under that.  Jane suggested we add this as an agenda item for the regular Board of Health meetings which is video taped and could help reach more people at home.

Beverly suggested that we create handouts for the topics we want to discuss so that anyone covering the booth can handle any topic.

Additional brainstorming suggested:
·       Can Sandy Bayne join our booth or put the 2 booths close together as Water Quality and Water Management overlap.
·       Water Management has some great presentation slides – can we use some of them.
·       What are some common questions that come to the board that we may be able to address at the booth or provide handouts for.
·       Can we discuss why the BoH is against fertilizers, herbicides, etc.  This may be covered by the Pond Remediation that Water Management will communicate along with buffers and pollution prevention.
·       Jane will see if Jean Roma can come to the next BoH meeting to share with us her program and presentation on Skin Testing.

Lois recommended we focus on 3 strong topics:
1.      Drug and household items disposal
2.      Flu Shot and Personal Health
3.      Septic Health
All agreed with that approach and stated to then add a couple of action items like the Skin Testing and a Free Raffle as a draw.

Free Raffle ideas:
·       1 hour ride on Tom’s Boat
·       Free heart healthy dinner
·       Free or discount off a septic pumping
·       A day with Martin and his dog
Think about ideas and who may make a donation but the item must be something that people want.

Action Items:
·       Jane will check with Sandy for Water Management involvement and slides
·       Jane will check with Jean re tent and coming to our next BoH meeting
·       Pat will file the application and talk to Paul about location which should be closer to the road to get the most response
·       ALL to think of catchy phrases, visual presentation, ideas for posters and raffle items

Next workshop will be either Tuesday, July 19th or Wednesday, July 20th.  Jane will confirm.
Next Board of Health meeting will be Thursday, June 30th and then Thursday,
