Sue Fischer and Bob Carlson presented the Cemetery proposal for funding. The past projects were reviewed. Praise was given to Jonathan Appell from Connecticut for his work on preservation of stones including working on cracks, bonding and revamping of fiberglass backing which had served for a long time after the work of the Collins family. The 2008 request for $17,000.00 shall include work on 40 slate gravestones at both Bridge Road and Cove Cemeteries. The work shall include the resetting of gravestones which do not have fiberglass backing, consolidating two (2) sandstones and six (6) field stones, raising the Rev. Treat gravestone, and conserving the plaque on the John Doane monument. If the funds are not sufficient, the work shall stop when funds are exhausted. Bob Carlson indicated
confidence in the contractor. Bob noted that cost estimates are not exact by the nature of the work on deteriorating stones.
Sheila Vanderhoef and Bob Varley presented the request for $51,000.00 for the window replacement on the Town Hall. The Historic Commission has been consulted and would like to see conformity with historical standards. The windows on the front part of the building were not replaced during the Town Hall renovation and are in need of replacement. Kathryn Sette stated that the windows should be of historical standards, i.e., wood windows with divided lights as opposed to vinyl inserts and a smooth glass surface. Bob Varley presented thermoglass replacement windows of similar profiles. Sheila Vanderhoef and Bob Varley shall obtain cost estimates for wood windows to comply with the request for more historical authenticity for review by the Community Preservation Committee. It was noted
that the windows on the Schoolhouse Museum are new windows on a new construction.
Sheila Vanderhoef and Jim Owens introduced the windmill restoration request for $55,000.00, which will include replacing the 1962 rusting shaft with a wood shaft of either white oak or orford cedar; redoing the brake on the facility; reconditioning the iron wheels used to turn the roof; and treating the wood with a borax mixture to prevent termites/beetles. Angles for the blades of the mill also shall be addressed. Jim Owens shall deliver a letter of the cost estimate from the contractor believed to be the only one in the region qualified to perform the work.
Sheila reported that there are environmental clean up issues at the Neighborhood Gas Station and that housing on the site shall not go forward. The Building Inspector has condemned the building. It is anticipated that the set aside funds shall return to the Community Preservation Housing Reserve. A Town Meeting vote may be necessary.
Minutes of January 10, 2008, were approved unanimously. Glenn reported on the long range planning comprehensive plan and shall invite Rich Bryant to the next meeting which is scheduled for February 7, 2008, at 5:30 p.m. At the next meeting, the Library and Vital Records presentations are anticipated. Hank shall determine whether the Swift-Daly proposal is still to be made and shall invite the proponents.
Meeting adjourned.
Very truly yours,
David J. Skiba, Clerk
