BIKEWAYS COMMITTEE
Minutes of March 14, 2012 Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 5:01 PM.
Present: Carol Dobek, Bob Donahoe, Mike Giblin, Bill O’Shea, Judy Parmelee, Paul Schofield,
Mia Blackwell (Associate member)
Absent: (excused) Sheri Cocchiola
The minutes of December 14, 2011 were approved as presented.
Old Business
- Tunnel situation-Mike discussed mirrors that would show the inside of the tunnel and bike-appropriate” rumble strips” on both entrances; he has experienced these in other parts of the country. Bob favored a blinking light, but remarked that they are probably cost-prohibitive and would be a target of vandalism. It was moved, seconded and passed unanimously that we recommend to the Eastham Police chief that he encourage the installation of bike-appropriate rumble strips and a mirror that shows the inside of the tunnel on both ends of the tunnel with signage that warns the cyclist of the strips.
- AmeriCorps Application-It was voted that we not submit a request this year due to lack of need.
- Foreign language signs-These have been prepared by Paul and will be laminated and distributed to the Eastham and vicinity bike shops.
New Business
- May Bike Ride-Carol presented the plans to date: The event will be held on May 12. Registration is at 10 AM at First Encounter Beach with the ride starting at 10:30. Christine Mickle of the Park and Recreation Department has made the poster and will publicize the ride and submit to the newspapers. This is officially scheduled with the town. The police department has given its OK and will be present for the group to cross Route 6. Officer Diana Back will accompany the riders as she did last year. Sheri is looking for offerings such as ice cream coupons to hand out. Judy will notify CCNS as the ride ends at Nauset Light Beach. Bob will call John Fallander asking about possible items available from Mass Bike.
- Mia suggested that stop signs on the bike trail be lowered so young people can see them. Bikeways is not sure what the sign law is. This should be referred to the Police chief.
- Mia asked for support for a path from the bike trail to businesses at the Red Barn on Route 6. It was decided to table this as more research is needed.
- Paul asked about another bike repair meeting as last year’s was quite successful. Paul will follow up with Idle Times Bike shop. It was agreed that this would need to be held in May, before Memorial Day if possible.
- Paul asked about the make-up of this committee when Bob and Judy leave at the end of June. There were no decisions about future Chair or Clerk.
The next meeting will be held on April 11, 2012 at 5PM.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:02 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Judy Parmelee, Clerk
