PUBLIC ACCESS COMMITTEE OF EASTHAM
DECEMBER 10, 2008
Present: Richard Adelman, Helen Derman, David Kern, Jeanette Marcucci
Town Officials: Ken Ainsworth, Long-Range Planning Advisory Board
Guest: Cathy Taylor, Assistant Director of CORD
CORRESPONDENCE: Jeanette sent a letter to Sheila Vanderhoef, Town Administrator thanking the Town for providing new microphones in the Large Meeting Room.
LONG-RANGE PLANNING: Ken explained the LRP Advisory Board’s role. This Board makes recommendations to the Board of Selectmen. A new version of the LRP comes out every 5 years. There are currently 35 prioritized suggestions for the Selectmen to consider including in the next LRP. PACE requested that the LRP Advisory Board recommend that a Bylaw on Visitability be included in the next version of the LRP. The Board meets once a month; meetings are open. Next meeting will be January 8th or 15th at 4PM.
TOWN PROJECTS:
Wiley Park Bridge/Trail: RESOLVED: Richard spoke with Henry Lind. The accessible bridge and trails are now open.
VISITABILITY:
Richard has been communicating with Jim Russo at Eastham Chamber of Commerce, Henry Digiacomo at Real Estate Brokers Association of Cape Cod, Anne & Leo Berard at Buyer Broker Association, Michael Kennedy at Cape Cod Builders Association, and Suzy Rettig at National Association of Homebuilders in Dennis regarding Visitability and HP parking/signage. Richard will send info and make follow-up calls to these organizations. Jim Russo will also receive a picture of the proper signage for HP/van spaces and Richard will ask Jeanette to write a brief note about Visitability, both for the Chamber’s newsletter.
PACE BROCHURES: Nearly finished. Sheila will meet with Richard/Helen to finalize before it is given to Maddie for printing.
SIGHT/HEARING LOSSES: From Jean Ann McLaughlin: “A good contact for the deaf is "Bobbi MacDonald" <bobbieam@comcast.net>. She is a Librarian in Dennisport.”
NEW PACE MEMBERS: David and Richard made follow-up calls to 4 people that had been suggested. No one has committed yet, but 1 or 2 are considering our request.
OTHER DISABILITY COMMITTEES:
Orleans Committee on Disability has a new Chairman: Jamie Balliett, jamie.balliett@gmail.com. She was unable to attend this PACE meeting due to work commitment, but she suggested that PACE members attend Orleans’ next meeting on 1/23/09 at 3 PM.
Cathy reported that Sandwich is restarting their Disability Committee. CORD has been sending staff to Cape Disability Commission/Committee meetings as able. This year they have attended meetings in Falmouth, Brewster, Harwich, Barnstable, Dennis, and twice in Eastham.
CORD PROGRAM:
Cathy gave us these links re: ADA revisions and Universal Design:
HP/ HP VAN PARKING: ADA requires that one HP space be HP-Van-accessible. If a business has only one HP space it must meet the larger requirements of a HP Van space. Discussion was held re: how to get this information out to businesses in Eastham. Once Town buildings are in compliance, PACE will contact businesses in 2009 and will enlist the help of the Police Department, if necessary. Currently, there are only 2 businesses in Town with the HP Van space: TD Bank North and 2 at The Red Barn.
These Minutes were approved electronically on January 10, 2009.
NEXT MEETING – TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2009 at 9:30 AM in the LARGE Meeting Room.
Respectfully Submitted,
Helen Derman, Secretary
