Minutes

Present:  Vice Chairperson; John Wright, Tim Adams, Len Heroux, Deb Mckinney.  Also present; Director; Ruth Checko, Program Coordinator; Shawn Mullen, Board of Finance Liaison; Alan Hurst  

Call to Order:  John Wright called the meeting to order.   

Approval of the minutes of the February 4, 2014 Regular Meeting and special meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board:  Len Heroux motioned to approve the minutes.  Deb Mckinney seconded the motion.  All approved.

Audience of Citizens:  None

Communications
  • Proposed Budget
Ruth Checko presented the Parks and Recreation Department’s proposed budget.  The budget was discussed and everyone has a copy.  
  •  Organizational Chart
Ruth Checko presented the proposed new organizational chart associated with the Organization Study conducted by Don Jacobs.  The chart was discussed and everyone received a copy.   

Director’s Report:  This was presented in new and unfinished business by Ruth Checko.  

Unfinished Business
  • Partnership with Senior Center, Commission on Aging, and Parks and Recreation for “Boomer” programming
This is an ongoing project.  
  • High School Athletic Field Lighting
Shock Electric has been awarded the project.  The timeline for the project depends on weather conditions.  
  • Court Sports in Village Center
Tim Adams is following up on this
  • Re-working of Sears Park Master Plan
Part of the money is still in the capitol budget for the fiscal year, however nothing can be done until the next fiscal year’s budget is approved.  
  • Advertising and marketing plan
Shawn Mullen will be contacting Cheryl Gioielli regarding this before the next meeting.  
  • Ideas for after-school program for Middle School age kids
This project is still being worked on.  
  • Partnering with Rotary on camp enrichment program
We are waiting to hear back from Jack Solomon and Rotary on this.  
  • Recreation space needs assessment discussion
Ruth Checko has started her report on this.  

New Business
  • Sears Park sticker fees
Town Council has ruled to waive the Sears Park Sticker Fees for the 2014 Summer Season.  
  • Plans for summer season
Parks and Recreation Staff is working on summer programing and plans.  We are low on applicants for summer seasonal positions.  

Other Concerns
  • Wesleyan Sailing Team
The Wesleyan Sailing Team has requested to use Sears Park again with the same fees as last season.  The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is ok with this again.

  • Recreational Facility
Nothing further at this time.

Mark Vickery motioned to adjourn the meeting.  Deb Mckinney seconded the motion.  All approved.
