Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Meeting

Present Board Members:  Chairperson, Rich Norkun; Daniel Roy; Tim Adams; Mark Vickery.  
Also Present:  Director, Ruth Plummer; Program Coordinator, Shawn Mullen.  

Call To Order:  Rich Norkun called to order the September 7, 2010 Regular Meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board to order.  

Approval of the minutes of the June 1, 2010 regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board:  Tim Adams motioned to approve the minutes of the June 1, 2010 Regular Meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.  Rich Norkun seconded.  All approved (4-0).    

Audience of Citizens:  Art Marsden of the East Hampton Lion’s Club:  Art requested that the Lions Club be allowed to install a memorial for Lions Club Members who have past away in front of the Picnic Shelter in Sears Park.  Art presented plans for the design to the board.  The board will discuss the request and Art will return at the next Regular Meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.  

Communications:  
  • Letter from Katie Morris to Ruth Plummer regarding Heart Safe Community.  Everyone saw a copy of the letter.  See Heart Safe Community under New Business.  
  • Town of East Hampton Sears Park Pass revenue.   Ruth Plummer passed out a copy of the revenue report for Sears Park Passes from April 9, 2010 to August 30, 2010.  The report was discussed and everyone has a copy.  
Director’s Report:  Ruth Plummer gave a Director’s Report and Shawn Mullen gave a report of the status of Parks and Recreation programming.  Everyone has a copy of each report.  

Unfinished Business:
  • Navigation ordinance recommendation
The bottom line on this issue is that the public will be educated on safe navigation in the future.  
  • Governor William O’Neil Amphitheater     
Daniel Roy motioned that the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board request details and specs of the Amphitheater with concerns as to it being appropriate in size and design for Sears Park.  The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board also requests that the Building Committee present plans to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for approval.  Tim Adams seconded the motion.  All approved (4-0).  

New Business:.
  • Jim Wild Memorial
The Parks and Recreation Department has purchased and installed a water fountain near the pavilion at Sears Park.  

  • Rotary Club interest
The East Hampton Rotary Club would like to figure out a plan of contribution to the East Hampton Parks and Recreation Department.  Rich Norkun is working with the Rotary Club on this.  
  • Tree Warden Report
Ruth Plummer gave a Tree Warden report and passed a copy of the report around.   
  • Sears Park Master Plan
An A2 Survey of Sears Park has been completed.  The plan had been to have the new Town Engineer do the site plan but the hiring of that position has been put on hold by Mr. O’Keefe indefinitely.  We have been instructed to put that job out to bid.  
  • Heart Safe Community designation
Katie Morris wrote in a letter to Ruth Plummer that East Hampton has been recognized as a Heart Safe Community.  Katie and the Ambulance Association thanked East Hampton Parks and Recreation for helping make this possible.  


Other Concerns:
  • Mark Vickery brought up several concerns about the baseball and softball fields.  Mark suggested that we re-visit the High School baseball field take care of some rocks that are a concern in the new clay that was recently put down.  Ruth Plummer will address this.  Mark was also concerned with the edging of the softball and baseball fields.  Mark will contact East Hampton Little League and see if they are willing to help the Parks and Recreation Department with this task.  
  • Rich Norkun inquired about the use of East Hampton’s fields for football and if any football was to be played on the fields.  Ruth Plummer replied that there will not be football played on the fields.

  • Recreational Facility
Nothing further at this time.  

Adjournment: Daniel Roy motioned to adjourn the September 7, 2010 Regular Meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.  Tim Adams seconded.  All approved (4-0)
