MIDDLE HADDAM HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION
Special MEETING
Wednesday, June 16, 2010 @ 6:30 p.m.

Minutes

  • Call to order – Chairman Royster called the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m.
  • Roll Call / Seating of Alternates – Roll call was taken.  Present were Commissioners James Royster Richard Walsh and David Kneeland, and alternate Commissioners Christopher Dart and Gina Ritchie.  Not present was Douglas Mackeown and George Coshow.  Commissioner Royster seated alternate Commissioners Christopher Dart and Gina Ritchie.

  • Public Remarks – Items Not on Agenda –   None
  • Public Hearings:  
  • Application #436, filed by Robert L. Heuffel, regarding 106 Middle Haddam Road, to replace existing roofing.
Mr. Erwin Flewelling reported that he will be removing and stripping the existing cedar shingle roofing material and replacing it with a 30-year architectural shingle consisting of CertainTeed Landmark Woodscape style, color “Weathered Wood”.  Mr. Flewelling also reported that the replacement material is manufactured to prevent algae growth and discoloration.

James Royster moved to approve the application with the clarification that the specific product being used is manufactured by CertainTeed Landmark Woodscape style, color “Weathered Wood”.  The motion was seconded by David Kneeland.  Motion Carried 5-0-0.

  • Correspondence –
  • Letter from Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. – Commissioner Royster reported that the Town received a letter from Vanasse Hangen Brustin, Inc. advising that Verizon Wireless intends to add a 20 foot extension to a 120 foot cell phone tower located at 151 Young Street.  Vanasse Hangen Brustlin is inviting comments from local historic groups regarding the potential effect the proposed extension may have on local historic groups.  The commission discussed that 151 Young Street is not part of the MHHD and that the tower cannot be seen from the MHHD.  The commission agreed that it can discuss the proposal, however it was agreed by all of the commissioners not to comment.
  • Commissioner Walsh reported that an application was received from Tracie Rozhon for 105 Middle Haddam Road, which will be considered at the next regular scheduled meeting.
  • Unfinished business:
  • Revisions to handbook  Commissioner Royster prepared and sent to each commissioner proposed changes dated May 29, 2010 that were discussed at the May 27, 2010 regular meeting.  Commissioner Royster proposed and move that the commission rescind the revisions to the handbook passed at the May 27, 2010 and substitute the revisions dated May 29, 2010.  The motion was seconded by Christopher Dart.  Motion Carried 5-0-0.
Gina Ritchie asked if the MHHDC can look at the application and page 6 of the handbook because of inconsistent language.  It was agreed that this issue will be discussed at the next regular scheduled meeting.

  • Adjournment – Richard Walsh moved to adjourn at 6:48 p.m., seconded by Christopher Dart.                              
                        Motion Carried 5-0-0.
