CONSERVATION – LAKE COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2011
7: 00 P.M.

Minutes – Draft

Present:  Chair Peter Zawisza, Vice Chair Allen Petell, Irene Curtis, Joe Carbonell, Mike Rose, Mike Brogan, Joe Mercieri, Nancy Selavka (7:09 pm)

Seating of Alternates:   None (letter designated J. Mercieri not received by Chair)

3.  Approval of Minutes

A.  Conservation-Lake Minutes of September 8, 2011

Motion made by Mr. Carbonell to approve minutes of September 8, 2011, seconded by Mr. Petell, Vote: Yes:6; No:0; Abstain: Mercieri, motion approved.

4.  Communications and Liaison Reports

Mr. Petell gave an overview of activities covered at the last Inland Wetlands meeting.  

Mr. Petell notified the Commission that he has completed mapping catch basin locations and has passed maps along to Public Works Director Hayden, who is hoping to have them digitized.  

5.  Public Remarks

Roger Abraham, 47 Clark Hill Road and EHHS teacher, was present to advise the Commission of the availability of involvement by his students in present or future projects.  

(Nancy Selavka arrived 7:09 p.m.)

Ms. Curtis volunteered to be Mr. Abraham’s liaison to this commission.

6.  Plan Review – None

7.  Old Business

A.  Sub-committee Report on Education

Mr. Petell stated it is the plan to have the it out in the spring.  The copying will be approximately $900 and it would be $500 for distribution in the RiverEast.  After discussion, consensus was that Mr. Petell check on at least 5,000.  

Mr. Petell discussed informational/educational series possibilities for the future, along with information disseminated in the past.  

Mr. Carbonell discussed a meeting that will be held on Tuesday, 2-21-12 at 6 p.m. (possibly at Angelico’s) to discuss what is happening to lakes in New England, and how to educate the public as to the environmental impacts.  The State DEEP will talk regarding items such as invasive algaes, etc. This informational meeting would be for Town staff and commission members.  

A.  Update on Watershed Signage Plan

Chair Zawisza mentioned that he signs have been delivered to Public Works and the Police Chief and Public Works Director have sited each location and given their input.  The signs will be installed as soon as possible.  Mr. Hayden will back charge the Commission for the posts and will handle the State permitting process.  

8.  New Business

  • Approval of Meeting Dates for 2012
Motion was made by Mr. Brogan to accept the dates as listed (see attached list); seconded by Ms. Curtis; Vote:  Yes: 7; No: 0; Abstain: Mercieri, motion passed.

  • Announcement of training date and time with Dr. Ken Wagner for water quality sampling (scheduling and updated date)
Ms. Selavka has not been able to reach Mr. Wagner.  Mr. Petell reported the equipment is still in the Building Department, possibly to be relocated to a more convenient location.  

  • Review of new wetlands maps for the Town – Previously done.  
  • Researching potential grants for water quality improvement and conservation purposes.  
Mr. Petell and/or Mr. Brogan to check with Mr. Carey to inquire as to availability of possible grants.  Discussion ensued regarding project possibilities.  

  • New direction of the Conservation-Lake Commission – Previously done.
Mr. Petell requested all to bring ideas for educational events to next meeting.

Mr. Petell informed the Commission that he made a display case for the watershed model out of the shipping case.  He is waiting for a piece of safety glass to be cut.  

Ms. Curtis mentioned the Lake draw down as well as her concern for the large amount of trees removed on the New Hope Church property.

Motion to adjourn was made by Mr. Petell, seconded by Ms. Selavka, at 7:50 p.m.  Meeting adjourned.
