CONSERVATION-LAKE COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
THURSDAY, FEBRAURY 10, 2011
7:00 p.m.

MINUTES


1.  Call to Order

Present:  Peter Zawisza, Allen Petell, Nancy Selavka, Irene Curtis, Michael Brogan
Absent:  Paul Peszynski, Mark Niosi, Michael Rose

Also Present:  Kerry Nielson, Director of Community & Enviromental Planning.

This regular meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.

2.  Seating of Alternates - None

3.  Approval of Minutes of the January 13, 2011 Special Meeting. - Approved.

4.  Communications and Liaison Reports

Ms. Nielson reported at a CT Audubon Society membership application came to the Department, and would like to know if Commission members are interested.

The Army Corps of Engineers sent an informational copy of a Public Notice to the Department.  

5.  Report of Director of Community and Environmental Planning.  

Ms Nielson discussed the fertilizer ordinance discussion on the calendar for 2-23-11 at the regular meeting of the I/W.

6.  Public Comments – None

7.  Old Business

a.  Updates on Watershed Signage Project for Lake Pocotopaug.   

Chair Zawisza updated the Commission on the status of the use of the logo on the proposed signs.

b.  Future Community/Educational Event (begin planning for Lake cleanup day)

Mr. Petell would like to propose a one day, one truck, free pass to the Transfer Station for items picked up on cleanup day; April 16, 2011.  Ms. Nielson will explore Pepsi’s possible involvement and local businesses will be asked for help and/or donations.  

c.  Sub-Committee Report on Education

Mr. Petell advised that two committee meetings had been cancelled due to inclement weather.  A meeting is scheduled for the 16th.  Emphasis is on a pamphlet and a Lake presentation, and aquatic life.  A “Create the Mascot” contest may be held in the school; and then possibly involve the seniors in costume making.  

d. Discussion on any additional comments on draft Conservation Subdivision Regulations – Section 30 in Zoning Regulations

Ms. Nielson updated the Commission on the status of the discussions.  Please send any comments to Ms. Nielson as soon as possible.

e.  Discussion on any additional comments on draft Road and Parking Requirements – Section 21 in Zoning Regulations.

8.  New Business

a.  Discussion on purchasing a Lake Watershed Topographic Model for educational purposes.

The Commission discussed the placement of the model, attributes to be included, etc. Ms. Nielson will keep all informed of the progress of this item.  

b.  Forming volunteer group for water quality monitoring for this summer, and setting up potential date for training.  

Ms. Nielson explained her progress on this item.  A possible trainer has been identified and she has spoken to several individuals previously involved.
