East Hampton Senior Center

MINUTES

Present:  Chairperson Cynthia DelFavero, Vice Chairperson Mary Jo Shafer, Commission Members Sue Greeno, Ann McLaughlin and Robert Petell and Alternate Patricia Dufour. ~Also present: Senior Center Director Jo Ann Ewing.

Call to Order:
Chairperson Cynthia DelFavero called the meeting to order at 3:03 p.m. at the East Hampton Senior Center.

Approval of Minutes:
A motion was made by Ms. Shafer, seconded by Ms. McLaughlin, to approve the minutes of the November 8, 2012 meeting as written. ~Voted (3-0-2) Ms. Greeno and Mr. Petell abstained as they were not present at that meeting.

Public Remarks:  
Rich Sheehan would like more advertisement of the meetings.

Len Johnson asked if Transportation will be discussed.

Maureen Hawkins commented on the handicap parking spaces at the Senior Center.

Correspondence:
A letter was received from Edgemere Condominiums requesting that Edgemere be a priority location for CL&P power restoration.  

A motion was made by Ms. Greeno, seconded by Ms. Shafer, that a letter be sent to the Town Manager and Richard Klotzbier regarding the request.  Voted (5-0).

Senior Services Report:
Ms. Ewing provided an update on the following:
  • Open enrollment has concluded
  • Discussions have been held with Parks & Recreation regarding programming for boomers
  • Holiday planning is underway
  • A senior fell off the curb at the Senior Center.  Ms. Ewing met with the Public Works director regarding the curbs.
  • Two new tax preparers will be available this year

Sub-Committee Reports:
Transportation – Ms. McLauglin is contacting East Haddam, Haddam, Marlborough, Portland and Cromwell regarding transportation.  She and Ms. Ewing will have a presentation for the next meeting.  Ms. DelFavero noted she met someone from Darien with information regarding transportation.

Health & Wellness – Ms. Shafer spoke with three Town Council members and they are interested in the adult playground idea.  Ms. DelFavero spoke with Ruth Plummer about the adult playground.  DEEP needs to research the boundaries for the Airline Trail properties.

Senior/Boomer Discounts
Ms. Shafer noted there was a misunderstanding with new employees at a couple of the businesses that offer the discount.

A motion was made by Ms. Greeno, seconded by Ms. McLaughlin to send a letter to the businesses that offer the senior/boomer discounts to thank them for their continued support.  Voted (5-0).

A new discount is now available for Higher Grounds Coffee Shop – 10% off for 60 years of age and older.

Emergency Preparedness Update:
None

Senior Survey:
Ms. Greeno noted there is another mailing option that is less expensive than bulk mail.  More information will be obtained on the mailing information. A Senior Survey Sub-Committee will be created.  Ms. Ewing will advertise for resident members.

Housing Authority Report:
Ms. McLaughlin reported the following:
  • East Hampton was not chosen for funding for congregate housing.  A consultant will be looking at the project plans.
  • There are no vacancies and there are 16-18 on the waiting list.
Public Remarks:  
Rich Sheehan commented on the property on each side of the Airline Trail for the adult playground idea.

A resident noted that there are special forms to fill out for CL&P for priority restoration.

Adjournment:
A motion was made by Ms. McLaughlin, seconded by Ms. Shafer, to adjourn the meeting at 4:22 p.m.  Voted (5-0).
