Present: Commission members Pauline Simko, Lance Johnson, Mary Jo Shafer, Nelson Maurice and Ann McLaughlin and staff members Town Manager Jeffery O’Keefe, Senior Center Director Jo Ann Ewing and Recording Secretary Cathy Sirois.

Call to Order:
Chairperson Simko called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.

Approval of Minutes:
A motion was made by Mr. Maurice, seconded by Mr. Johnson, to approve the minutes of the August 13, 2009 meeting as written.  Voted (5-0).

Public Remarks:  None
New Business:
a.      MySeniorCenter.Org:
Chris Hamilton from MySeniorCenter.Org provided a presentation on Wednesday, August 9, 2009 to the Commission.  This program is used for tracking purposes at Senior Centers.  It is used in Marlborough, Glastonbury and Hebron currently.  The Commission discussed funding options for the possible purchase of the software.

Ms. Shafer provided information on several upcoming meetings:
  • Middlesex Elderly Service Providers breakfast meetings in Middletown.  The next meeting is September 29th and will discuss the Gatekeeper Program, a new program to train people to help seniors in need
  • October 14th CT Interfaith Network on Aging Spirituality and Aging Conference at the Mercy Center at 9am to 3:30pm
  • October 21st 4th annual Mental Health and Aging Conference at the Legislative Office Building from 8am to 3pm
Old Business:
a.      Mission Statement:  Members provided their input into the mission statement.  Ms. McLaughlin will gather all of the suggestions and combine them into a draft mission statement for the next meeting.

b.      Town Brochure re: Commissions:  Mr. O’Keefe reported that Kerry Nielson, Director of Community and Environmental Planning, is working on the handbook for the commissions.  The handbook will be distributed to all commission once completed.

Housing Authority Report:
A Special Meeting was held to review companies as part of obtaining funding for congregate housing.  Several members of the Housing Authority attended the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials convention.  The Housing Authority is also in the process of approving a company for purchasing handicap accessible doors for Chatham Acres and Bellwood Court.

Senior Services Report:
Energy Assistance training will be starting for their computer program, which will make the energy assistance processing easier.  A seasonal flu shot clinic will be held on October 14th.  The seniors went on a boat ride on the CT river recently and will be attending a taping of the Better Connecticut show.

Mr. O’Keefe provided information on the State of the Town Address on October 15th at St. Clements.

The group discussed grants and fundraising opportunities.  

Commission members will email suggestions for goals to Ms. McLaughlin.

A motion was made by Ms. Simko, seconded by Mr. Johnson, to adjourn the meeting at 3:50 p.m.  (Voted 5-0)
