EAST WINDSOR VETERANS COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
for
Thursday, January 3, 2008
OPENING:
Ernie Teixeira, Chairman, opened this meeting at 7:03 P.M. at the East Windsor Town Hall.  There were eight commission members in attendance: Ernie Teixeira, James Barton, Mark Simmons, Ron Hwalek, Warren Wenz, George Butenkoff, Ken Crouch, and Dave Malo.  Absent: Fred McDermott, William Abbe Sr., Rick Webster, Nick Macsata.  
Ernie Teixeira led the commission members in reciting the “Pledge of Allegiance”.

Ernie also held a moment of silent prayer in remembrance of E.W.V.C. member, Don Brown, who recently passed away.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: The previous meeting’s minutes of December 6, 2007, were submitted for the approval of those present.  George Butenkoff moved to accept the meeting’s minutes as submitted.  This was seconded by Ron Hwalek and carried unanimously.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Ron Hwalek submitted his year end treasurer’s report and reported a $10,100.01 balance in our “Revolving Fund”.  Ron responded to several questions from those present.  George Butenkoff moved to accept the treasurer’s report as submitted.  This was seconded by Warren Wenz and carried unanimously.  The commission members present thanked Warren Wenz for his efforts in gathering sponsors and donations surpassing our previous years.
MOTION: Ron Hwalek moved to transfer $6,000.00 from our “Revolving Fund”        into our “Trust Fund”.  This was seconded by George Butenkoff and carried unanimously.

STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony Committee-
        Warren Wenz reported that Maj. Gen. Thaddeus Martin is being contacted to be our guest speaker at our Memorial day ceremony. Warren added that the “fly over” is also being arranged.
           
Memorial Day Poster/Essay Contest Committee-
        After a brief discussion it was agreed that this year’s essay theme topic would be “What does Memorial Day mean to me.”  Ernie asked the commission members to bring any fresh ideas for essay themes to our next meeting.

Scholarship Committee-
        Warren Wenz initiated a discussion on the distribution of our scholarship awards.  Several ideas were considered.
MOTION: Warren Wenz moved to no longer choose one male applicant and one female applicant and to pick the two scholarship awards from the total of all entries regardless of gender.  This was seconded by George Butenkoff.  The motion failed 3 in favor and 4 opposed.

Veterans Cemetery Project-
        No Report.      

Veterans Day Road Race Committee-
       No Report.
OTHER BUSINESS:

A brief discussion was held regarding the possibility of changing the total number of E.W.V.C. members from the thirteen total currently specified.  It was the consensus of those present that we should reopen a discussion on this after the charter revision is completed.

Ernie Teixeira reminded all that our next regular meeting is scheduled for    February 7, 2008
at East Windsor Town Hall
7:00 P.M.

ADJOURNMENT
        Hearing of no further business to come before the commission, Chairman Ernie Teixeira asked for a motion to adjourn. Warren Wenz moved to adjourn this meeting and this was seconded by George Butenkoff.  The motion carried unanimously.  The Chairman closed the meeting at 7:32 P.M.
