EAST WINDSOR VETERANS COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
for
Thursday, October 4, 2007
OPENING:
Warren Wenz, Chairman, opened this meeting at 7:00 P.M. at the East Windsor Town Hall.  There were ten commission members in attendance: Warren Wenz, Ron Hwalek, Mark Simmons, George Butenkoff, Don Brown, William Abbe Sr., James Barton, Rick Webster, Ken Crouch and Ernie Teixeira.  
Absent: Fred McDermott, Nick Macsata and Dave Malo.  
Warren Wenz led the commission members in reciting the “Pledge of Allegiance”.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: The previous meeting’s minutes of September 6, 2007, were submitted for the approval of those present.  George Butenkoff moved to accept the meeting’s minutes as submitted.  This was seconded by Jim Barton and carried unanimously.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Ron Hwalek reported that he had no new updates.

STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony Committee-
        No report
           
Memorial Day Poster/Essay Contest Committee-
        No report

Scholarship Committee-
        No report

Veterans Cemetery Project-
        Warren Wenz read a letter received from Mr. Dan Burnham, President East Windsor Cemetery Association, regarding the replacement of the veterans’ flag holders at their grave sites.  The text of Mr. Burnham’s letter indicates that he does not wish to comply with our commission’s request to replace the flag holders.   Ken Crouch read a letter received from the Connecticut Attorney General’s office.  Ken had inquired as to our standing on having the flag holders at our veterans’ graves replaced by the East Windsor Cemetery Association who had removed them.  The Attorney General’s office stated in their response that they fully support our position on this matter.  Warren directed Ken Crouch to draft a letter to the East Windsor Cemetery Association stipulating that they replace the flag holders at our Veterans’ grave sites.

Ken Crouch reported that the Memorial Brick Walkway at our cemetery has been completed and that more memorial bricks have since been purchased.  The newly purchased bricks will be engraved and placed in the walkway.  Ken said that the materials for this walkway cost our commission about $800.00 and Mr. John Guzzi installed the walkway free of charge.  George Butenkoff and Ernie Teixeira asked that the East Windsor Veterans Commission give Ken Crouch a vote of thanks for a job well done on the memorial brick project.  Ken Crouch asked that a certificate of appreciation be presented to Mr. John Guzzi for his generous donation of time & labor installing the memorial walkway. All present agreed this was a good idea.

Veterans Day Road Race Committee-
Warren Wenz reported that our race day plans appear to be on schedule for our 8th Annual Veterans Day Race to be held Saturday November 10, 2007.
 Mark Simmons suggested that our commission make use of the new “Smart Board” located in the town hall meeting room for posting our race day information.  
         Warren Wenz reported that Ed Filipone, First Selectman, was looking into scheduling a guest speaker for our race day ceremonies.  Warren also noted that to date approximately $10,000.00 has been collected in cash donations, sponsors’ ads and gifts toward our road race.

OTHER BUSINESS:

George Butenkoff reported on the “Veterans’ Living History” project is still being conducted at the E.W. High School and wanted to notify all veterans that they may participate.  George provided a flier explaining this project.
George also reported that he now had about 30 repaired computers available for veterans & their families.  George discussed some of the restrictions on the distribution of these computers.
Warren Wenz discussed an invitation received from Representative Ted Graziani asking if we wish to be present at the East Windsor to Windsor Locks Bridge renaming ceremony.  The bridge is to be renamed the “World War I” bridge.
 
MOTION: George Butenkoff moved to have the East Windsor Veterans Commission participate in this event.  This was seconded by Ken Crouch and carried 9 in favor and 1 opposed.

Warren Wenz reminded all that our next regular meeting, scheduled for    November 1, 2007, has been cancelled and will be will rescheduled to
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2007, at 7:00 PM
at East Windsor Town Hall
Warren asked that all commission members attend to assist in preparations for the 5K Road Race


ADJOURNMENT
        Hearing of no further business to come before the commission, Chairman Warren Wenz asked for a motion to adjourn.  George Butenkoff moved to adjourn this meeting and this was seconded by Ernie Teixeira.  The motion carried unanimously.  The Chairman closed the meeting at 7:40 P.M.
