MEETING MINUTES
for
Thursday, September 6, 2007
OPENING:
Warren Wenz, Chairman, opened this meeting at 7:00 P.M. at the East Windsor Town Hall. There were nine commission members in attendance: Warren Wenz, Ron Hwalek, Mark Simmons, George Butenkoff, James Barton, Rick Webster, Ken Crouch, Ernie Teixeira and Dave Malo.
Absent: William Abbe Sr., Don Brown, Fred McDermott, and Nick Macsata.
SECRETARY’S REPORT: The previous meeting’s minutes of August 20, 2007, were submitted for the approval of those present. George Butenkoff moved to accept the meeting’s minutes as submitted. This was seconded by Ernie Teixeira and carried unanimously.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Ron Hwalek reported that he had no new updates.
STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony Committee-

Veterans Cemetery Project-
Ken Crouch reported that the “Memorial Brick Walkway” was installed recently at our cemetery monument and he brought along some photos for members to view. Ken added that the “Memorial Brick Walkway” cost the E.W. Veterans Commission under $1,000.00 for materials and that Mr. John Guzzi provided installation labor at no cost. Ken also reported the American flags have been replaced on our veterans’ graves as accurately as possible at this time. Ken also presented a draft letter asking Mr. Dan Burnham, President E.W. Cemetery Assn., to have the removed veterans’ grave markers replaced. Warren Wenz said he would have the letter finalized and delivered to Mr. Burnham.

Ken also reported that he noted some damage caused by mowing machines to gravestones and planned to advise the E.W. Cemetery Assn. about this. Ken asked that E.W. Veteran Commission members be assigned to routinely inspect all of our cemeteries for maintenance problems. Warren Wenz assigned E.W. Veterans Commission members as follows:
Dave Malo – Warehouse Point & Windsorville Cemeteries
Jim Barton – Springdale Cemetery
Warren Wenz – Route 5 Cemetery
Ken Crouch – Scantic Cemetery
Veterans Day Road Race Committee-
Warren Wenz reported that our race day plans appear to be on schedule for our 8th Annual Veterans Day Race to be held Saturday November 10, 2007. Ron Hwalek brought T-Shirt color samples for the Commission to review.
MOTION: George Butenkoff Moved to select “Kelly Green” as a first choice T-Shirt color and the “Ash” color as a second choice and to order 250 T-Shirts. This was seconded by Ernie Teixeira and carried unanimously.
Warren assigned Rick Webster to be in charge of T-Shirt distribution to runners and sponsors and Ernie Teixeira to be in charge of T-Shirt sales on race day. Warren Wenz said that he planned to advertise our road race in the “Airport News”.
OTHER BUSINESS:
George Butenkoff reported that he had obtained 34 reconditioned computers for military families. A short discussion on a distribution plan was held. It was agreed that these computers should go to veterans and military families and that Representative Graziani should be asked to be involved.
Ken Crouch spoke about the Barry Poulter American Legion Post #40 in Warehouse Point starting to renovate and restore both their building and membership. Ken mentioned the American Legion’s need for a new roof and said that a lowest bid came in at $5,000.00 for the project.
MOTION: George Butenkoff moved to donate $5,000.00 from the E.W. Veterans’ Commission treasury to the Barry Poulter American Legion Post #40. This was seconded by Mark Simmons. The motion carried 8 in favor and 1 abstention (Dave Malo).

Warren Wenz reported that he spoke to E.W. School Superintendent Howes about his students donating food items for our road race collection. East Windsor students have an ongoing contest to see who collects the most food items and the winning class gets a pizza party.
MOTION: George Butenkoff moved to donate up to $100.00 from the E.W. Veterans’ Commission treasury toward a pizza party for the students who collect food donations for our race day collection. This was seconded by Ernie Teixeira and carried unanimously.
Warren also mentioned that Dan Webster had incurred a cost of $144.88 for publishing a book of maps & locations of veterans’ grave sites in East Windsor for his Eagle Scout project. Warren added that Dan Webster provided our Veterans’ Commission and the E.W. Cemetery Assn. with a bound edition of his book.
MOTION: George Butenkoff moved to give Dan Webster the amount of $144.88 to cover his costs from our treasury for this beneficial project. This was seconded by Ron Hwalek and carried unanimously.
Warren Wenz reminded all that our next regular meeting will be held on
Thursday, October 4, 2007, at 7:00 PM
at East Windsor Town Hall
ADJOURNMENT
Hearing of no further business to come before the commission, Chairman Warren Wenz asked for a motion to adjourn. George Butenkoff moved to adjourn this meeting and this was seconded by Jim Barton. The motion carried unanimously. The Chairman closed the meeting at 7:59 P.M.
