EAST WINDSOR VETERANS COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
for
Thursday, January 4, 2007
OPENING:
Warren Wenz, Chairman, opened this meeting at 7:03 P.M. at the East Windsor Town Hall.  There were seven commission members in attendance: Warren Wenz, Ron Hwalek, Mark Simmons, Dave Malo, James Barton, Ken Crouch, Nicholas Macsata, and First Selectman Linda Roberts was also in attendance.  
Absent: William Abbe Sr., Rick Webster, George Butenkoff, Ernie Teixeira, Don Brown, and Fred McDermott.

Chairman Warren Wenz led the Commission in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

SECRETARY’S REPORT:     The minutes of the December 7, 2006, meeting were reviewed by those present.
MOTION: Ron Hwalek moved to accept the previous meeting’s minutes as submitted.  This was seconded by Jim Barton and carried unanimously.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Ron Hwalek presented the 2006 year end treasurer’s report for review.  Ron answered several questions about the report.  
MOTION: Dave Malo moved to accept the treasurer’s report as submitted.  This was seconded by Nick Macsata and carried unanimously.
MOTION: RonHwalek moved to transfer $5,000.00 from our treasury’s “Rotating” account into the “Trust Fund”.  This was seconded by Jim Barton and carried unanimously.

STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony Committee-
        No report

Memorial Day Poster/Essay Contest Committee-
        At our last meeting Warren Wenz asked for new ideas for our Memorial Day essay contest theme.  After a brief discussion all agreed to request the upper level grade students submit a biographical interview of a local veteran.  Those in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade would still submit art/poster entries.  Warren directed Mark Simmons to edit the contest rules notice to reflect this change.

Veterans Cemetery Project-

Veterans Day Road Race Committee-
        This year’s race is planned for Saturday, November 10, 2007.  Ron Hwalek mentioned that he has not yet received a contract from “Platt” timing service.

OTHER BUSINESS:

        Dave Malo mentioned that Bill Abbe was recently released from the hospital and is doing well.  Ken Crouch and Jim Barton reported that Fred McDermott is also doing better.  Ron Hwalek mentioned that Don Brown is responding very well to his care.  Warren Wenz asked that we keep Bill, Fred and Don in our thoughts and prayers for speedy recoveries.
        First Selectman Linda Roberts presented a request to set up a special account as provided under C.G.S 27-123 within the Veterans Commission treasury to accept donations to be used for the burial of indigent veterans.  Those present discussed the request briefly.
MOTION:  Jim Barton moved to set up an account to accept donations for the burial of indigent veterans to be used at the discretion of the East Windsor Human Service Coordinator in accordance with State Statutes (i.e. C.G.S. 27-123) outlining the Town’s responsibility for such burials.  This was seconded by Ron Hwalek and carried unanimously.

ADJOURNMENT

        Hearing of no further business to come before the commission, Chairman Warren Wenz asked for a motion to adjourn.  Nick Mascata moved to adjourn this meeting and this was seconded by Ron Hwalek.  The motion carried unanimously.  The Chairman closed the meeting at 7:45 P.M.
