Town of East Windsor
Public Hearing

Neighborhood Assistance Act

Thursday, May 11, 2006

First Selectman Linda Roberts opened the Public Hearing at 7:30 p.m. at the East Windsor Town Hall, Broad Brook, CT 06016

The purpose of this public hearing is to discuss and address the applications submitted for the 2006 Neighborhood Assistant Act.  Ms. Roberts provided the background of this act and how it is used.  Applicants submit their proposals, and if approved, can seek donations to support their projects.  The donor can apply for a partial credit of the contribution as a tax deduction.  Ms. Roberts noted the requirement to hold a public hearing to provide an opportunity for public comment.  Subsequently, the applicants would be contacted regarding whether they are approved for the program.  Ms. Roberts cited the two applications submitted:  1) East Windsor Historical Society and, 2) East Windsor Emergency Food Bank.

George Butenkoff, representing the Historical Society, provided details of the restoration requirements at the East Windsor Academy on Scantic Road.  He explained the need to refurbish the Barber Shop--that the center section is missing and the cabinets need rebuilding, floors sanded, etc., in order to bring it back to its original condition.  In addition, the Probate Court needs renovation.  The estimated cost is $15,000 with the use of volunteers offering their services.

Betsy Burns, the Director of Human Services, discussed the existing emergency food bank and the need to add to it with non-perishables and perishables, now that freezers/refrigerators are available.  She explained the assistance they provide to the Stock Pot and other organizations in need.  The food bank is available to the residents during the office hours and emergency situations.

No additional comments were offered by those present.

Ms. Roberts closed the public hearing at 7:42 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy J. Rudek
