VETERAN’S AFFAIRS COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING SEPTEMBER 10, 2012
1. Call to Order: Bernie called the meeting to order at 7:10pm.
2. Roll Call:
Present: Bernie Corona, Kirk Allison, Linda Carrasquillo, Paul Barry, Vincent Parys,
David Whalen, J. Roger Pelletier
Absent: Dominic Fulco, Jr., Mary-Ann Roczynski
3. Approval of Minutes:
May 7, 2012 & June 4, 2012 – Upon a motion by J. Roger, seconded by Paul Barry, the Commission voted to approve the minutes of the May 7, 2012 and June 4, 2012 meetings.
4. Old Business:
- Bicentennial Square – No official word received on the status of the project. Will bring up to the Patriotic Commission.
- Cleaner for Grave Markers – Kirk inquired if there was enough left or if it was all gone. Vinny reported all the graves had been cleaned and that there was half a barrel left.
- Headstones – Paul reminded the commission that any veterans headstones were broken or damaged, the federal gov’t will replace free of charge for the veteran only – no family members.
5. New Business:
- Bernie passed out miscellaneous information on: Veterans Drivers License – how the state is going to put vet status on them; Energy assistance and help purchasing scooters or wheelchairs for veterans.
- Wounded Warriors – Vinny has wounded warriors wristbands left over from the charity hockey game available for veterans programs. They can be sold and the profits used for the veterans programs. Anyone who needs them should contact him.
- Veterans Discounts to State Parks – Kirk let the commission know that DEEP offers free parking for life at state parks for veterans – called a nutmeg pass. Anyone interested needs to write to the DEEP.
- Stand Down – Paul reminded the Commission that Stand Down 2012 would take place on September 21st at 287 West Street, Rocky Hill from 7am – 2pm. Connecticut has the second largest Stand Down in the United States. All that is needed to attend is proof of veteran status. You can pre-register or register on site that day.
- Paul invited the Commission to attend a dedication ceremony for a monument that was constructed – paid for by the 43rd Infantry Div. The dedication Ceremony is on Sept. 22. For more information, contact Paul.
- Linda informed the Commission about a Women’s Veterans Weekend sponsored by the Salvation Army on October 6-7, 2012 in Ashford, CT. All women veterans are welcome.
- Approval of Bills – Upon a motion by Vinny, seconded by Linda, the following bills were approved
Shirts/Hats/Magnet Signs for Memorial Day Parade $464.78
Clerk $ 80.00
- Adjournment – Upon a motion by Paul, seconded by Dave, the Commission adjourned at 7:44pm.
The next meeting will be October 1, 2012 in the Town Council Chamber.
