VETERAN’S AFFAIRS COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING OCTOBER 3, 2011
1. Call to Order: Bernie called the meeting to order at 7:12 pm.
2. Roll Call:
Present: Kirk Allison, Bernie Corona, Paul Barry, Vincent Parys, Linda Carrasquillo,
J. Roger Pelletier, Mary-Ann Roczynski
Absent: Dominic Fulco, Jr., and David Whalen
3. Approval of Minutes:
September 12, 2011 – Paul made a motion, seconded by Kirk to approve the minutes. Motion carried.
4. Old Business:
- Headstone Cleaner – Vincent checked with the Public Workers Department, and they have completed the cleaning. Vincent was informed that they used a ½ barrel to complete the task. Discussion was that some of the headstones could use a better cleaning, so maybe those should be cleaned again next year, as they have many years of grime built up.
5. New Business:
- Bernie passed out information on B&B offering free nights over Veterans Day Weekend, PTSD, and Agent Orange Korea Updates.
- Discussion on the veterans discount given by Lowes and Home Depot, their website states that you must have a service contact disability to obtain the discount year round, but they will offer the discount on Veterans Day. Bernie stated if you can’t get the discount now, keeping trying, some stores may not follow their website guidelines.
- Flags will be placed on the Veterans graves on November 5, 2011, and volunteers are welcome.
- Kirk showed us the challenge coin that he was given by the Veterans Assoc. of UCONN as a thank you for assisting with the flag ceremony at the Oct 1 UCONN Football game.
- The Veterans Day Parade in Hartford has a start time now of 12:30 and will be held on November 6.
6. Adjournment – Roger made a motion, seconded by Kirk to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary-Ann Roczynski, Secretary
