11-1-10 Veterans Affairs Commission Minutes
Veterans Affairs Commission

November 1, 2010

Town Council Chambers

Regular Meeting

Call to Order: The Veterans Affairs Commission meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m.

Roll Call: Bernie Corona, Chair Dominic Fulco Sr, Kirk Allison, Linda Carrasquillo, Paul Barry, Stanley deMello and Mary-Ann Roczynski.

Approval of Minutes: A motion was made to approve the minutes of the October 4, 2010 meeting by Paul Barry and seconded by Kirk Allison, voted and approved.

Old Business:

Bicentennial Square – Chair Corona spoke at the Patriot Commission meeting asking for their support to re name Bi-Centennial Square to Veterans Bi-Centennial Square.  Chairperson Margaret A. Byrnes will check to determine steps needed to approve this action. Stan deMello stated that Vinny's Garden Center landscaper would be wiling to help design pathways and gardens when the commissions decides on what it would like to achieve for the Veterans Bi-Centennial Square. Kirk Allison is contacting a local Elks club as well as East Hartford public Works about the bricks that can have names engraved on them of family members, and loved ones, for making a path in Veterans Bi-Centennial Square.

Plaque for SSG Ford – The awarding of a plaque to honor SSG Ford has been changed from Veterans Day 2010 to Memorial Day 2011.  A plaque mounted on a rock will be place at the Veterans Bi-Centennial Square in remembrance of SSG Ford.

New Business:

Veteran’s Day Parade – Discussion was held about the annual Veterans Parade to be held on November 7 in Hartford, Bernie informed the Commission that the DAV received their division for the parade and they will be in the last division, Bernie stated that for the DAV members to stand around 11:00A M until 2:30ish to step off is not an option; as most of these veterans are handicapped and unable to stand or wait for that length of time. Paul Barry stated that he would address the VVA at his meeting on Thursday-as to whether or not they would like to take part in the parade, as they td have many older veterans who would not be able to stand and wait for that length of time. Bernie stated that this is a Veterans parade, and to have the veterans waiting for any length of time while four other divisions march on is missing the intent of a “Veterans Day Parade”.

Adjournment: A motion was made by Dominic Fulco and seconded by Linda Carrasqillo to adjourn the meeting. So passed. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Mary-Ann Roczynski
Secretary
