Hockanum River Commission Meeting Minutes
June 27, 2013
Commissioners present: Christine Durrer, Dave Cannell, Stacy Smith, Tony Hollister, Bruce Jokubaitis, Tim Larson
Also present: Ken Sek, Paula Saaf and Ted Fravel
Call to order at 6:05
Opportunity for citizens to speak:
Approval of minutes: Approved March 14, 2013 minutes.
Old Business:
Bus removal – One commissioner volunteered to get the GPS locations of bus. If approved for Source to Sea project, we would have to cut trees that had grown up in the last 50 years uphill from the bus.
Race wrap up and comments – Need to write up and put together a race manual with each job description. Also need to follow up with Goodwin to make sure bathrooms are available because several people left before the awards were given out because they had to go to the bathroom.
Also, need to look into finding more sponsorship.
Tim has a contact for Tshirts we could use since our current Tshirt guy wasn’t too happy with us. Also perhaps Beth, the VP of the Hartford Marathon Foundation, would be a good source.
Tim suggested having the Rotary’s duck race and our kayak race on the same day – both at Labor Field. The idea being that with the two events combined – that would draw a bigger crowd and people would stick around at Labor Field. He brought up the idea that the river could be cleaned up where it runs alongside of Labor Field. There was the dilemma about whether the kayakers would go back to Labor Field, since some park their car at Goodwin and get shuttled back to Labor Field at the start of the race. Instead they could get shuttled back after the race for the ceremonies to take place at Labor Field. Stacy was concerned about the effect on the ecosystem of the river from the clearing job at the Labor Field section.
New Business:
Source to Sea preparation – Talked about getting the bus taken out as our Source to Sea project. Continuance of this subject at next meeting which would be before Source to Sea date.
Recommendations for new commissioners: Paula said she knew Fern Strong who she thought would make a great commissioner. Christine said she would contact her.
Ideas for summer clean-ups: We talked about maybe doing monthly summer cleanups around town since the river trails were looking really good. Thank you, Ken.
Other new business: Paula informed us of the Triple Crown on July 20 and 21 in Tarifville.
