FINE ARTS COMMISSION
Meeting of April 12, 2012


Vice Chair Florence Schroeter called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.  

I.  ROLL CALL
PRESENT:  Regina Barall; Terrye Blackstone; Glynis McKenzie; Judy Okeson; Maureen Rodgers;
       Betty Russell; Dan Russell; Florence Schroeter; Sue Tukey;  Prescille Yamamoto.         
         
      ABSENT:    Karen Howe (excused); Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien (excused); John Ryan (excused).           
     
II.     MINUTES
                MOTION  By Glynis McKenzie
                                Seconded by Prescille Yamamoto
                To approve the minutes of March 8, 2012

Two questions were asked:  The time of the EHSYF Cabaret is 7:00 p.m. and Paul Bisaccia’s performance is at 2:00 p.m.
                        Approved.

III.    CHAIR’S REPORT                          
Vice Chair Schroeter received an invitation from Fine Arts Director of EHPS Laura White for the Commission to attend the Art at the Capital being held on May 17 at 6:30 p.m.           

IV.     CORRESPONDENCE
        The following correspondence was received:
-John Ryan stating he is working out of state and will be unable to do the film series on Saturday. Further, his friend received a grant to return to Afghanistan with a film crew to take photos.  The photo exhibit will be planned for November 2012.
- Andrew J. Kelly Collection be exhibited at St. Joseph’s College
-Andrew Wyeth exhibit at the Wadsworth

V.      COMMITTEE REPORTS
EHSYF – Cabaret/Silent Auction April 28 – Veteran’s Memorial Clubhouse.
The EHSYF Cabaret/Silent Auction will be held on April 28 at the Veteran’s Memorial Clubhouse. Time of the event is 7:00 p.m. tickets are $8.00 in advance and $10.00 at the door.

Glynis McKenzie announced that the EHSYF will be doing “Once on this Island” for the summer show.  Valerie Nettleton will be taking over as director.  She further reported that Karen Howe is working to get a new sound system.

DanceOngoing Willowbrook Program, Children’s Program 6/9
        Around The World 4/22

A children’s recital will take place on Saturday, June 9 at 4:00 p.m. at the Circle of Life studio.  This will include children from Willowbrook School.

Around the World will be held on April 22 at.  Regina Barall requested $100 for an ad in the East Hartford Gazette.

The Circle of Life/Arts for All will be hosting an Argentine Tango program this Saturday. Lessons begin at 8:30 p.m. with the performance beginning at 10:00 p.m.
                                
Drama/Lecture/Poetry
Regina Barall reported that there will be an Idol Program on May 17th.  She also reported there will be a  Children’s Library Program.
                        
Music – Paul Bisaccia – May 6, 2012 – First Church
Vice Chair Shroeter reported that Paul Bisaccia will perform at 2:00 p.m.  He is sending out new DVD/CDs promoting this new program.  Cost for his performance will be $800.  The piano at First Church will be tuned and and invoice will be sent.

Brass Quintet – Fall 2012
Betty Russell will report in May on the time and date for the event.

Film Series                                            
Films scheduled  - April 14, 2012.
        Glynis McKenzie reported that this is the last film of the series.  

Judy Okeson announced there will be a Chicken Dinner at the Congregational Church from 5-7.  She invited Commissioners to attend the dinner then go to the movie.

Art
Terrye Blackstone reported that William Oellers will be doing an Art League presentation on Sunday, April 15 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

                                To pay $150 to William Oellers for his lecture, slide and demonstration presentation on April 15.
                                Approved with one nay (Prescille Yamamoto).

Terry further discussed the Art League Festival being held on May 12 on the Raymond Library lawn.  Discussion was held on the approximate cost stating the Commission will purchase an Award, the cost for the adjudicator (approximately $250), calligrapher ($50), plaque ($25) and photographer (if John Ryan is not available).

                                To give additional funding to the Art Sub-committee up to $1200 for the Art League Festival.

        Discussion was held, questioning if this was enough funding.

                                To give additional funding for the Art League Festival for $2200.
                                Approved.
                
Children’s Programs
Regina Barall reported the Circle of Life/Arts for All have done two additional Dance/Movement programs at the library. The first program was funded by Fine Arts.  The additional programs were funded by Circle of Life.  She stated this program targeted 3-7 year old children and would like additional funding to continue the program.

VI.     OLD BUSINESS                                    
Vice Chair Florence Schroeter discussed the $1500 given to Podunk Bluegrass by the Commission.  Correspondence was given to the Commissioners from Mike Walsh, Finance Director.  He explained that the town had sent Podunk a deposit in September which included the Commission funding.

Prescille Yamamoto stated for the record that Chair Howe discuss the issue with Mayor Leclerc to have the $1500 returned to the Commission.



VII.    NEW BUSINESS                            
Prescille Yamamoto reported that there is still $8000 left in the budget for the Commission and stated that the Commissioners should investigate programming for the new fiscal year.  The abundance of funding left is due to not scheduling programs.  She recommended that programs be discussed at the May meeting for next year.

IX.     MEMBER’S CONCERNS
Terrye Blackstone reported she had received correspondence from a 55+ Active Adult community and it was noted in upcoming events that Paul Bisaccia was to perform.

The next Fine Arts Meeting will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at the EHCCC, 50 Chapman Place, Room 12.
