FINE ARTS COMMISSION
Meeting of November 10, 2011
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.
I. ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Regina Barall; Terrye Blackstone; Karen Howe; Judy Okeson; Maureen Rodgers; Betty Russell; Dan Russell; Florence Schroeter;

II. MINUTES

To approve the minutes of October 13, 2011
Corrections: Karen Howe was absent from the October 13, 2011 meeting.
Clarification: Mary Pet IS the former Chairperson of the Economic Development Commission.
Approved with corrections.
III. CHAIR’S REPORT
Chair Howe reported that Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien is on a leave of absence from the Commission until further notice.
Chair Howe did receive a copy of an email from Roberta Sweeney resigning from the Commission. Roberta Sweeney sent it to her district chair, Tony Kaiser and to the Mayor.
Chair Howe reported that a fundraiser was taking place in the auditorium at the EHCCC. “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” $2 of the admission was being donated to a charity listed on the back of the program.
IV. CORRESPONDENCE
Chair Howe distributed the Holiday Fest brochure.
V. COMMITTEE REPORTS
Film Series No report at this time. Films are scheduled for January, February, March, April 2012.
Art – Workshop – Lucianna Heineman 11/13/11 – EHCCC Room 212
Terrye Blackstone reported that Lucianna Heineman will be doing a demonstration and class on November 13. Cost will be $200.

To pay Lucianna Heineman $200 for the workshop being held on November 13.
Approved.
Terrye Blackstone further reported that Lynn Thrall will be doing 3 master classes at Sunset Ridge School scheduled for December 9, 12 and 14. If she supplies the materials the cost will be $700.
Terrye Blackstone brought in the program from the Art Teacher Showcase exhibit which was held in 1996.
Children’s Programs
Regina Barall reported that she will be presenting a program at the library on November 12.
EHSYF – St. Patrick’s Day program – 3/9/12
Chair Howe reported that there will be a concert on March 9, 2012 with a St. Patrick’s Day theme.
EHSYF will be performing for Holiday Fest, and Singing Christmas Cards will also be used as a fundraiser this season.
Karen Howe reported that EHSYF director, Joseph Connolly is ill.
Music – Paul Bisaccia 12/3/2011
Florence Schroeter distributed posters for the program being held during Holiday Fest.
Terrye Blackstone recommended the Fine Arts Commission give an honorarium to First Church for their continued support to the community. Discussion was held. It was recommended this be discussed in the new year.
Dance – Ongoing Willowbrook Program, Dance Program April 2012
Regina Barall reported the dance program is taking place at Willowbrook. The East Hartford Women’s club will be visiting the program. She is anticipating the program will be the entire school year.
Drama/Lecture/Poetry
Prescille Yamamoto reported she has not heard from any of the performers she contacted.
Mini-Grant – East Hartford Public Schools
Betty Russell reported that she, Reggie Barall and Judy Okeson met to review the applications. Total requests were $5919. The committee recommended applications be approved for the total amount of $3069, which is $69 over budget.

To approve $69 over the budgeted amount of $3000.
Approved.
Betty Russell reported there were good recommendations from the applications that the Commission will use. The Fine Arts Commission will be sponsoring a drummer group for Black History Month. Cost is $500.
MOTION By Betty Russell
Seconded by Maureen Rodgers
To have a drumming program for Black History Month totaling $500.
Approved.
Betty Russell further recommended having a Brass Quartet perform in the spring. Cost is $500.
Discussion will be held in December.

VI. OLD BUSINESS

No information at this time.
Slate of Officers from Nominating Committee
Prescille Yamamoto read the nominations for the Slate of Officers for the next two years:
Chairperson – Karen Howe
Vice Chair – Florence Schroeter
Secretary – Glynis McKenzie
Historian – Judith Okeson

To accept the slate of officers as nominated.
Approved.
Votes will be casted at the December 2011 meeting.

IX. MEMBER’S CONCERNS
Prescille Yamamoto recommended Commissioners bring hors d'oeuvres to the next meeting to celebrate the holidays.
