Meeting of April 8, 2010

Chair Howe called the meeting of the Fine Arts Commission to order at 7:04 p.m. in Room 12 of the Cultural Center.  

I.  ROLL CALL
PRESENT:   Regina Barall; Terrye Blackstone; Karen Howe; Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien;
Glynis McKenzie Judy Okeson; ); Maureen Rodgers;  John Ryan; Florence Schroeter;
Roberta Sweeney; Prescille Yamamoto.
                     
ABSENT:    Betty Russell (excused); Dan Russell (excused); Sue Tukey (excused).
           
II.   MINUTES           
MOTION  By Hilde Mayranen O’Brien
                Seconded by Prescille Yamamamoto
                To approve the minutes of March 11, 2010.
                
CORRECTION:   Florence Schroeter reported she was excused for the meeting of March 11, 2010.
                   Approved with correction.

III.    CHAIR’S REPORT
Chair Howe received a letter from Candis Guastamachio thanking the Commission for their support as well as advertising in the program.
        
        Chair Howe received a letter from Mayor Currey appointing Roberta Sweeney to the Commission.

Chair Howe received information very late to attend Art at the Capital.  She was unable to attend due to the timing.

IV.     CORRESPONDENCE
Information was received from the following:
                -  New Britain Museum on the schedule of exhibits
                -  Information on the Town Wide Student Art Show being held at EHCCC
                
V.      COMMITTEE REPORTS
PHOTOGRAPHS/PAINTINGS PROJECTS FOR GOODWIN COLLEGE
Terrye Blackstone reported that John Ryan was to take photographs of the barns recommended by Raymond Johnson.  The photos were taken.

Drama/Lecture Poetry                                    
Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien reported that she would like to have Lorice Harvey, former student of Hilde’s, read some of her poetry.  Terrye Blackstone recommended Poetry in the Park and having her as the guest poet.  Hilde will report back in May with further information.

Music
Florence Schroeter stated she is unable to do the publicity for the Bisaccia performance.  Glynis McKenzie agreed to do the publicity.  Discussion was held on doing publicity on Beethoven.com

                        To spend $300 from the advertising budget for publicity on Beethoven.com for
                        Paul Bisaccia.
                        Approved.

Glynis McKenzie reported there were 42 attendees for the organ concert.  Mayor Currey, along with her husband, was in attendance.

Photography                                             
John Ryan reported he is having difficulty meeting with Goodwin College for an exhibit.  He will contact Roger Moss to see if the EHCCC will be available for a Photography Exhibit.  He will report on times and dates next month.     
        
        Film Series                                                     
Glynis McKenzie reported the Film Series is complete.  Very few people were in attendance for the last feature.  This was probably due to the date (the day before Easter).  The film series was successful and discussion was held as to doing it again next year.

                        To continue the Film Series for the 2010-2011 year.

Art                                                             
Terrye Blackstone reported there will be a proof at the end of the month for the Art League Website.  There will be links for the Fine Arts Commission as well as a link for students.   The goal is to have the website completed  in time for the Art League Festival.

Terrye further reported she is attempting to get an Art Adjudicator for the festival.  It was agreed the adjudicator will receive $150.  Money will also be spent for the purchase award, plaque and photo of the purchase award.

Terrye Blackstone reported for Sue Tukey to announce a program being sponsored by the Historical Society in Glastonbury featuring artist Harry White.  The exhibit begins on April 11 and continues until April 17, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., at 1944 Main Street. Admission is free.

        Children’s Programs                                             
Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien reported that Donald Boudreaux will work with children at the Raymond Library on April 19 and 20 from 10 – 12 noon.  He will be having the children work on a mobile which will be presented at a May 1 reception, 11:00 – 12:00 noon for parents and the public to see.    Hilde recommended that the balance of the Children’s Program money be used to have Donald Boudreaux work with students over the summer months.  She will speak with Bea Piersa.

Karen Howe reported she is the community liaison for Willowbrook School and she is recommending that Buffa do an interactive performance at a mandatory family night in the fall.  Parents, along with students, attend this family event.  Karen will report on a date and will schedule Buffa to do the event.

        Dance                                                           
Regina Barall reported the program will be on April 11 from 2-6 pm.  This will be a town wide dance fest with various artists participating.  This program is free to the public.  There was an ad in the Gazette.  Cost is $102.

Regina further reported there will be a talent contest for EHHS, EHMS and Sunset Ridge students on May 15 at EHCCC at 6:00 p.m.  Try-outs will be held on April 26.  The winner will receive money for the prom and ipods.

        EHSYF                                                           
Glynis McKenzie reported the EHSYF Cabaret “Starry Night” will be held on May 1 at 7:00 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Clubhouse.  Tickets in advance are $8.00 and they are $10.00 at the door.

        VI.     OLD BUSINESS                                            
  • Grant Application – Circle of Life
Regina Barall submitted a grant application for $2000 to work with students studying poetry, music and dance throughout the next school year beginning in July.  This money is needed for expenses and many in-kind contributions are given for this program.

                        To approve the $2000 Grant Application to Circle of Life for the program as written.
                        Approved (with one abstention – Terrye Blackstone).

  • Ad from the Fine Arts Commission announcing Donald Boudreaux exhibit
Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien stated that Donald Boudreaux will be holding an exhibit at the Wadsworth Atheneum.   Hilde will work with Mr. Boudreaux to design an ad for the East Hartford Gazette.  She will have further information next month.

                        To place a $102 ad in the East Hartford Gazette for the Donald Boudreaux exhibit.
                        Approved.

XI.     MEMBER’S CONCERNS                                       
Florence Schroeter stated she has a work number and work email address and requested the clerk update the Commission roster.

Chair Howe reported she will not be in attendance at the June 10, 2010 meeting.  Vice-chair Florence Schroeter will chair the meeting.
