FINE ARTS COMMISSION
                                                                            Meeting of May 14, 2009

Chair Yamamoto called the meeting of the Fine Arts Commission to order at 7:02 p.m. in Room 12 of the Cultural Center.

I.  ROLL CALL
PRESENT:  Terrye Blackstone; Eileen Driscoll; Glynis McKenzie; Judy Okeson; Maureen Rodgers;
                     Dan Russell; John Ryan; Florence Schroeter; Sue Tukey; Prescille Yamamoto.
 
ABSENT: Regina Barall; Karen Howe (excused); Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien; Betty Russell (excused).

II.   MINUTES

IV.     CHAIR’S REPORT                                  
        Chair Yamamoto reported she will not be in attendance for the July 9 meeting.  Vice-chair Karen Howe is busy with EHSYF rehearsals during that time.  This will be an agenda item
        in June.                
                

V.      CORRESPONDENCE                                          
        Correspondence was as follows:

  • Request for scholarship

VI.     COMMITTEE REPORTS
        
Art
        Terrye Blackston reported that the Art League Festival was held on May 9.  Winner of the Purchase Award         was Maryann Desovich of Windsor Locks.   Title of work is
        “Milkweed” – a watercolor. Cost was $450.  The adjudicator was Clinton Deckert and his honorarium is $125.   Mr. Deckert explained to the artists what he was looking for in their
        paintings.

        Terrye attended the East Hartford Public Schools Student Art Show.  She stated it was a spectacular event.  Terrye also attended the dedication of Goodwin College.

        Terrye received correspondence from Charlotte Maynard, music teacher in East Hartford Public Schools.  Discussion was held in reference to having the Fine Arts Commission
        support a teacher band concert.  Maureen Rodgers will contact Ms. Maynard.
        
        Terrye Blackstone reported there will be a Mad Hatter’s Party sponsored by the Historical Society and Friends of Center Cemetery.  Program is June 20, 2009.

        EHSYF   
        Karen Howe submitted a grant application requesting $2000.  This will be discussed under payment of  bills.

        East Hartford Public Schools Mini-Grants                No report at this time.

        Holiday Fest                                                    No report at this time.

        Drama/Lecture/Poetry                                    No report at this time.                                 
        Music                                                   
        Florence Schroeter reported that Ken Lawlor will be tuning the piano for the concert at First Church.  The Church Women’s Group will be doing a reception.  The program is this
        Sunday, May 17 at 2:00 p.m.

        Glynis McKenzie reported there will be an Organ Recital at St. John’s Church on June 7 at 2:00 p.m. Glynis McKenzie reported she has contracted the City Singers for a Holiday
        Concert on December 12 at St. John’s Church.

Photography                                             
John Ryan reported that a Photography Exhibit will be held June 22 – July 5 at Goodwin College.   Prints will be accepted from June 15 – June 20.  He will request that Park and Rec
accept the photos for exhibit.  Minimum size will be 8x10 with maximum size 16x20.  A maximum of 3 prints per exhibitor will be accepted. He has secured judges for the program,
and has received donations for prizes.  An opening night reception will be held on the 22nd .

Film Series                                             No report at this time.


VII.   OLD BUSINESS
        Guest- Holly Reed, East Hartford Art League
Holly Reed was unavailable to attend the meeting because she is out of state.

Discussion was held on her request for funding of an Art League Website.  Chair Yamamoto has contacted an acquaintance who owns a website company and she spoke to him in reference to concerns of updating the site, etc.  This will be an agenda item for June.

VIII.  NEW BUSINESS
        Chair Yamamoto spoke with Emil Kopcha in reference to the Commission supporting the Fine Arts program in the public schools.  He informed her that staff will not be having
        Professional Development        with consultants this coming school year.  Chair Yamamoto requested that the members consider giving funding to support Professional Development
        to all fine arts teachers in East Hartford Public Schools.  Members shared their concern with this issue.
