Beautification Commission
Thursday, March 5, 2009   



Present: Helen Boardman; Pat Byrnes; Marylee Hickey; Dolores Kehoe; Sue Kickery; Mary Mourey; Betty Russell; Tony Russo; Pat Sirois.

Also Present: Roger Moss, Director/Park and Recreation
                 Bonnie Nichols, Director/Inspections and Permits

Call to order:
Chair Sirois called the meeting of the Beautification Commission to order at 7:20 p.m.

Acceptance of minutes of FEBRUARY 5, 2009
Marylee Hickey made a motion to accept the minutes of the February 5, 2009 meeting. Seconded by Mary Mourey.  Approved.

Opportunity for citizens to speak:              No report at this time.

Financial Report:
Mary Mourey reported the General Budget balance is $7605.00.
Remembrance fund balance is $520.96.

Communications:
Chair Sirois received a letter from Mayor Currey thanking the Commission for reducing the requested 2009-2010 budget by 5%.

Chair's report: 
Chair Sirois reported that Mayor Currey gave the Commission permission to purchase frames for Beautification Awards.  Mary Mourey reported the frames are on order.

Tree Warden's REPORT:           
Billy Taylor stated there was no activity for February 2009.

Old Business:
A.  Arbor Day
Dan Brodeur, Principal of Goodwin School, has agreed to host Arbor Day on May 1, 2009.  He has received all the information pertinent to the event.  He emailed the clerk to inform the Commission that Mr. Zito, the new Superintendent, will be attending.

B.  Purchase of frames for Awards
See information under Chair’s report.

New Business                                            None.                           

Other Business                                          
Roger Moss reported that monies encumbered from the 2007-08 budget for the planters are being liquidated and money is being returned to the town.

Mary Mourey reported the following monies are still encumbered from 2007-08 Beautification Commission budget:
                Terra Gardens           $295.03
                Vinny’s                 $399.00
                Amando’s                        $300.00 (awaiting an invoice)

Tony Russo will go Vinny’s to purchase the tree and bush for Arbor Day.


Concerns of the Commission                      
Roger Moss reported he will not have any part-time workers this summer.  These workers were responsible for the maintenance of plantings throughout town.  Discussion was held in reference to this concern.  It was decided that Roger Moss and Vice Chair Marylee Hickey would request a meeting with Mayor Currey in reference to spring planting.  The major concern would be watering, weeding, etc. Tony Russo concurred with Roger on the maintenance issue. Roger will report back at next month’s meeting.

        Arbor Day Foundation (membership)                       $ 15.00

Marylee Hickey made a motion to pay the bills as submitted.  Seconded by Mary Mourey. Unanimously approved.

Adjournment:
There being no further business,  Marylee Hickey made a motion to adjourn the meeting at  7:54 p.m. Seconded by Mary Mourey. Unanimous.

The next meeting of the Commission will be April 2, 2009 in the Building Department Conference Room at 7:15 p.m.
