Beautification Commission

Present:    Pat Sirois; Pat Byrnes; Marylee Hickey; Dolores Kehoe; Mary Mourey, Betty Russell, Tony Russo          

Also Present:  Bill Taylor, Director/Public Works            

Absent:          Helen Boardman (excused); Sue Kickery (excused)        
                  Roger Moss, Director/Park and Recreation (excused)
                   Bonnie Nichols, Director/Inspections and Permits (excused)

Call to order:
Chair Sirois called the meeting of the Beautification Commission to order at 7:20 p.m.

Acceptance of minutes of June 25, 2009    
Marylee Hickey made a motion to accept the minutes of the June 25, 2009 meeting. Seconded by Mary Mourey.  Approved.

Opportunity for citizens to speak:              No report at this time.

Financial Report:                                       No report at this  time.

Communications:                                 None.                           

Chair's report:                                         
Chair Sirois reported there was an article about the new flower barrels in the Rare Reminder.

Tree Warden's RePORT:                           No report at this time.

Old Business:
A.  Community Pride Award
     Two awards were given at the Town Council Meeting.
        -      Student Community Gardens at EHHS
        This project started as a green project at EHHS.  Bird feeders and butterfly bushes were        planted as well as perennials.  Four teachers responsible for the project were in       attendance (Kate Patla, Liz Stagis, Sarah Barry and Loretta DaCunha) as well as 2       students.
        -       East Hartford Board of Education Building
        Mike Cosgrove, custodian at the Board of Education building received the award.  

        Chairman of the Board of Education, Mary Alice Dwyer and Superintendent Zito were in    attendance.

B.  Replacement of Barrels
Tony Russo reported that new barrels have been placed throughout town.  There are approximately 7 barrels in inventory.

New Business:                                           

A.  Beautification Awards
Discussion was held on the following residential properties:
        410 Forest Street                       123 Jessica Drive
        572 Forest Street                       236 Main Street
        10 Palmer                               Garvan Street
        83 Montclair                            
Dolores Kehoe made a motion to award the following residential awards to 410 Forest Street, 83 Montclair Drive, 123 Jessica Drive and 572 Forest Street, for the Month of August 2009.  Seconded by Mary Mourey.   Approved.

The following businesses were under consideration:
        Taco Bell, Silver Lane
        Dunkin Donuts, Silver Lane
        Pizza Hut, Silver Lane
        Smokers World, Willow Trailer Park
        IAM Temple, Oak Street
        Hillside Condominiums
        Cabela’s

Dolores Kehoe made a motion to award Taco Bell the business award for August 2009.  Seconded by Mary Mourey.  Approved.

Chair Sirois will present these awards at the September 1, 2009 Town Council meeting.

Dolores Kehoe made the motion to pay the clerk.  Seconded by Marylee Hickey.  Approved.

There being no further business, Marylee Hickey made a motion to adjourn the meeting at    8:15 p.m. Seconded by Pat Byrnes.  Approved.
