Selectmen's Minutes 10/9/07
The weekly meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held on Tuesday evening, October 9, 2007 at 7:35 p.m.

Present: Theresa McNulty, Chairman; Peter A. Hamilton
                Karen Grabau, Adm. Assistant

Not Present: David L. Walsh, Clerk
      George Samia, Town Administrator

TAX CLASSIFICATION HEARING
Board met with Board of Assessor members, Curtis Gluck and Paula Wolfe and Director of Assessing, Cheryl Pooler.

Mr. Hamilton read the following Hearing Notice:

        TAX HEARING - The Board of Selectmen and Board of Assessors will hold a Public
Hearing on property tax classifications on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at 7:35 p.m. in the First Floor Conference Room at the Town Hall.

This hearing, which is required by law, determines whether the Town will have one classification or will differentiate among several classes when setting the tax rate.

Mrs. Pooler explained that the make-up of the Town is approximately 92% residential; a split tax rate would be a hardship on businesses; new tax rate will be $10.77, waiting for approval.

Recommendation of the Board of Assessors was that Selectmen vote that there would be no split tax rate.

Discussed possibility of increase in commercial base in due to several new commercial businesses in Town. Mrs. Pooler noted that the increase in residential would offset the increase in commercial. Assessors agreed that it was not realistic to look to an increase in commercial base.

M/Hamilton, s/McNulty, a unanimous vote, move to approve a single tax rate for 2008 per the recommendation of the Board of Assessors.

M/Hamilton, s/McNulty, a unanimous vote, move to approve the request for Use of the Town Common submitted by Meghan Cecille Damiano on October 12, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. for a wedding ceremony.

Mrs. McNulty offered a personal thank-you to all the participants in the Annual Skylur Spagone Walk. Noted that it was another successful event.

CORRESPONDENCE
        Notification of the appointment of Phillip Wolfe as a Call Firefighter
        Assessment from Plymouth County Commissioners for 2008 in amount of $1,201,087.58

Mr. Hamilton stated that the County Treasurer would attend a meeting to explain the various services provided to the Town from this assessment.

M/Hamilton, s/McNulty, move to close Open Session and go into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing pending litigation and personnel issues and will not be returning to Open Session.
VOTE: Yes – Hamilton, McNulty; a unanimous vote in favor.
