Call to order
Dedie Wieler, Chair, called the meeting to order at 7:35AM.
Attendees included: Tom Bennett, Eleanor Beth, Julia Burgess, Jacque Cage, Jay Ferriter, Judie Flanders, Chris Knowles, Rex Jarrell, Karen Meeks, Cynthia Mitchell, Paddy Moore, Gayle Poggi, Oceana Rames, Connie Teixeria, Dedie Wieler, Terre Young
Guests: Ronnie Gullette and Kathleen Seymore of Mass 211
Vote to approve the Minutes of the January 28, 2010 meeting: Requests to amend minutes regarding report of Caregiver Homes and items under Elder Affairs were made and noted. Moved and seconded; minutes approved.
The next scheduled meeting will be April 21st.
Treasurer Report: Julia Burgess: The Health Council still has $500. Elder Affairs requests financial support for the printing of their pocket guide. The quote for 1000 copies is $288 plus postage. As there are no competing requests the vote was unanimous to support this. The motion was made to apply for membership to the MVTV Local Access for annual dues of $95. was discussed and approved. The Health Council will send one delegate to the local access tv to be trained for usage of video camera and be capable of using local media for access to public information. The motion was seconded and the vote unanimous.
Nominating: Chris Knowles: Three new members have indicated a desire to join the council. They are: Dave Caron, a public official from the Oak Bluffs Board of Health, Rev. Rob Hensley, a consumer, and Amanda Hutchison, public official, Aquinnah Board of Health. A Ballot for Membership was offered containing the following members reapplying for continued membership; Cindy Doyle, Patsy McCornack, Jacque Cage, James Weiss, Jay Ferriter, Julia Burgess, Sharon Clauss-Zanger, Terre Young, Rex Jarrell and Paddy Moore. Susan Wasserman made the motion to cast one ballot for the entire slate. Motion was seconded by Connie Teixeira and the motion was approved and the vote for the slate, unanimous.
Coordinating Committee: Dedie Wieler: Committee membership is a voted position and the membership chooses the slate of officers. Current members are Dedie Weiler, Chair, Cindy Mitchell, Vice Chair, Terre Young, Secretary, Oceana Rames, and Patsy McCornack. Rex Jarrell and Judy Flanders are stepping down. More CC members are needed as well as someone willing to Chair the Council as Dedie is stepping down as chair. If anyone is interested or has questions, please call Dedie.
Rural Scholars: Rex Jarrell: This committee is looking for members to join in their work and a project to offer the nursing and medical students. The committee’s time line is to consider proposals for this year’s program and have discussions and choice of project at our May meeting creating a final decision by June.
MVH Community Health Initiatives: Dedie Weiler: The DON work continues with a realization of the goal of completion later than first projected. Attendees in the process are made up of half Council members and half officials and the process proves to be “fascinating”.
Mass 211: Ronnie Gullette and Kathleen Seymore offered and extensive introduction to the directory usage of Mass 211. The presentation was very informative.
Homeless update: Connie Teixeira: A 24/7 hotline has been activated through MVCS when normal homeless agency is not available. Connie has received a $15K award for homeless prevention. The dollars must be matched and useable by the end of September.
The next Dukes County Health Council meeting will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2010 at 7:30 in the Public Safety Building in West Tisbury.
