DCHC Minutes 2-3-2011
DUKES COUNTY HEALTH COUNCIL
Minutes
Thursday February 3, 2011

Call to order

Oceana Rames, Chair, called the meeting to order at 7:05 AM.

Attendees included: Julia Burgess, Dave Caron, Tad Crawford, Valerio Destefani, Jay Ferriter, Judie Flanders, Amanda Hutchinson, Rex Jarrell, Patsy McCornack, Karen Meeks, Cynthia Mitchell, Paddy Moore, JoAnn Murphy, Gayle Poggi, Oceana Rames, Bob Tonti, Dedie Wieler, Terre Young    Guests: Michael Loberg, Matt Poole and Maura Velley

Rural Scholars: Patsy McCornack; The sole purpose of this meeting is to vote on two proposals for Rural Scholar Projects.

Michael L, Matt P. and Maura V, offered a proposal titled: Effects of Treatment Models & Public Education on the Incidence and Acute Treatment of Tick-Borne Illness on MV. They feel that the students will contribute greatly to the advancement of the Island’s Boards of Health project currently funded by the CHI. Their hope is to create a center of excellence here for Lyme management, create a perfect model and educate visitors who go back to states that have no Lyme.

Paddy M. described a project for the med students which focuses on the mental health and substance abuse of the elderly. This project would constitute a basic needs assessment for island elders and assist in next steps in health care, prevention and health promotion for elders. The project would also evaluate a CHI funded program CORE, a project of MVCS and the local Councils on Aging. The growing population of the elderly presents an unknown challenge for the development of appropriate services for this population.

Community Services decided to withdraw their project relating to services for the community members with disabilities.

After much discussion, the group offered to bring a larger student group and offer both projects. Housing will be a challenge and all agreed to work on a solution.  A vote was taken by ballot and the majority voted for the Lyme proposal. Patsy agreed to ask Suzanne Cashman if two student groups might be possible and we shall know the outcome of that question by next meeting.

The meeting adjourned by 9:10

Respectfully submitted,  Terre D. Young  Secretary
