COUNTY OF DUKES COUNTY COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
An Executive Session of the County of Dukes County Commissioners was held Wednesday,
July 16, 2003 at 5:18 p.m. in the conference room of the County Administration Building, notice of such meeting having been posted as required by law.
Commissioners Present: Leonard Jason, Jr.; Robert Sawyer; Leslie Leland; John Alley, Chairman; Nelson Smith; Paul Strauss. Absent: Roger Wey
Also Present: Dianne Powers, Acting County Manager; Marsha Smolev, Executive Assistant; Laurie Perry.
Commissioner Sawyer reported on his attempts to obtain additional verification for Ms. Perry. Commissioner Smith reiterated his concerns. Commissioner Strauss stressed the Commissioners’ objective which was to help Ms. Perry get documentation of her degree. The Commissioners discussed whether verification from a former employer stating the degree was a prerequisite to that job would be sufficient documentation. Commissioners Leland agreed it would. Ms. Powers suggested asking the former employer to sign an affidavit under penalty of perjury to that effect and stated that she thought that would satisfy the issue. Commissioner Strauss said a level of documentation needed to be satisfied to meet the requirement for the job and suggested more than one document be presented. Chairman Alley
said that if each employer listed on the resume signed a notarized letter, that would be sufficient. Commissioner Smith said that was not enough for him, that he wanted confirmation from Northeastern that they’d made an error. Commissioner Sawyer was asked to contact three employers, ask if a Bachelor’s Degree was required. Chairman Alley voiced concern that the press had heard in open session that there was an issue and added that the timeline for the documentation was that it be presented at the next meeting, July 23, 2003.
Chairman Alley called for a Roll Call vote to adjourn: Commissioner Sawyer – aye; Commissioner Jason – aye; Commissioner Smith – aye; Commissioner Strauss – aye; Commissioner Leland – aye; Chairman Alley – aye. The Commissioners adjourned the Executive Session at 5:59 PM.
