Lee Mahoney Director for CART – gave a description of the CART services offered to residents.
Funding comes from: Federal 59%, Municipality 29%, Grants 10%, 5% and State 1%. Derry residents use 35% of the service and funding from the Town is 29%. Reconsideration of the requested $44,000 from the FY10 budget would be appreciated.
Bonita LaVallee, Bypass 28 – CART provides curb to curb service. She used the service during a recent illness. She is in favor of the requested budget funds.
Councilor Carney asked if this was in the Human Service budgets list. Frank Childs replied, “Yes”.
John Burtis, Lorri Rd – Spoke on the current economy and personal sacrifices being made. He suggested finding other ways to make cuts to supply for the other service requests. Questioned why the Fire Department has a snow plow to clean around its hydrants and cisterns or if 49% of the ambulance calls are outside of Derry why the Town is giving a discounted rate to other towns. Also why do we budget for three separate maintenance departments why aren’t they combined?
Cathy Mercer, Hampstead Rd-Adult Learner Services of Greater Derry – was cut from the FY10 budget
the request was for $2,500. Cathy gave an overview of the services offered to citizens through this program and a handout to Town Council. This organization had 82 students in their last program. They have been in Derry for 15 yrs.
Nancy Tolan, Perley Rd – Nancy is a tutor for the Derry Adult Learner Services. She stated that 75 – 80% of the students are Derry Residents.
Barbara McCarthy, Lawrence Rd – Barbara is a State Rep and supports Derry Adult Learner Services.
Phyllis Katsakorias, Bradford St – Asked the Town Council to support the Derry Adult Learner Services and put the $2,500 back into the budget.
Kay Watman, Londonderry – is a tutor for the Derry Adult Learner Services and also supports this group.
James Zaniboni, Stark Rd – Asked the Town Council to hold the line on the budget. If his taxes increase he will have to move out of Town.
Connie Toote, Gervaise Dr – Considering the population of Derry, $2,500 is not a lot of money being asked for by the Adult Learner Services of Greater Derry. There is a waiting list for this program.
Al Dimmock, High St – Town Council should hold the taxes in Derry down the best they can. Whether it’s $2,500 or $25,000 it still has an impact on taxes.
Brandy Baboucher, Rockingham County Action – Asked Town Council to reinstate the $10,000 request for the FY10 budget.
Sharon Brody Rockingham County Action, Director of Fuel and Electric Assistance – The town receives quarterly reports from them so it is known how many clients are served in Derry. In FY08 615 Derry residents were given fuel assistance in FY09 682; the dollar amount went from $387,098 in 2008 to $669,482 in 2009. She is requesting the $10,000 to be reinstated.
Ginny Holmes – supports the Derry Adult Learner Service program.
