Letter to support the “Alvin Glaser Memorial Family Assistance Fund.”

Discuss with Tony Martin the option of pledging a certain amount quarterly by

donators.

Update from Valerie Alves regarding possible donation from DMS Parent Group for supplies, food and drinks for Youth Advocate support groups.

   Youth Advocate’s Report:  

   New Business:    

1.      Appointment with Mr. Normand Ouellette, representing the Saint Jean the Baptist Service Organization, who will present a donation to the Dartmouth Youth Commission Gift Account.  (Please note:  At the request of our guest, a reporter from The Chronicle will be present for a story and picture.  Mr. Gagne, Executive Administrator, has also been invited at Mr. Ouellette’s request for the photo op.)

2.      Review budget accounts.

3.      New business from the floor.

Minutes

Due to lack of a quorum, this was an informal meeting between Commissioners and guests in attendance.  The meeting began at 7:17 P.M.

   Lorraine Gagne, Vice-chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7: P.M.

   There were no comments regarding the August 27, 2003 meeting minutes.  The minutes will be voted on at the next scheduled meeting.  

Old Business:  

   Update on Dartmouthyouth.com  

Kevin stated he needs to spend approximately one full day to make changes and additions to the Web site to bring it up-to-date. 
Kevin is pleased that the Web site continues to generate email to him from parents and youth.  Kevin recently distributed Dartmouthyouth.com key chains to students at Dartmouth High School.

Report from Kevin Lee and Valerie Alves regarding update of work being done on Alvin Glaser Memorial Family Assistance Fund:  

Valerie stated that both she and Kevin have been inundated with outside work due to the start of the school year and a new job.  They hope to get back on track and follow up on some loose ends.


Valerie reported that a mailing list has been comprised with approximately 150 names that they hope to mail out in early December.  This letter will be sent to selected individuals asking for a donation to the fund.  The second mailing would be scheduled in the spring.  Valerie, Kevin and Tony will meet in November to finalize the letter and list.

Jay Swanson asked how the public would be made aware of the Alvin Glaser Memorial Family Assistance Fund.  Kevin stated that it would be channeled through the schools, guidance counselors, nurses, town hall employees, Youth Commission members and word of mouth.  

Dartmouth Girl Power:  

Kevin reported that the team leaders consist of himself, Kim Hubert, DMS prevention specialist, Joanne Jaber, senior intern from UMass Dartmouth, and Amelia Erins, DHS senior.  To date, ten girls have signed up.  The first meeting is scheduled for October 9, 2003 from 2:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Update on DMS Parent Group donation:  

Valerie stated that the DMS Parent Group generously donated $300.00 to Dartmouth Girl Power.  Heidi Gotlib also made a generous donation.  She presented the group with Dartmouth Girl Power T-shirts.

Old Business from the floor:  

There was no old business at this time.

New Business:    

Appointment with Mr. Normand Ouellette, representing Saint Jean the Baptist Service Organization.  

Mr. Ouellette and his wife, Lynette, presented the Youth Commission with a check for 554.00 on behalf of Saint Jean the Baptist Service Organization.  Mr. Ouellette stated that he is also a member of The Route 6 Task Force, along with Mr. Michael Gagne, Executive Administrator.  Mr. Ouellette and Mr. Gagne were talking at a meeting and Mr. Ouellette stated that Saint Jean the Baptist Service Organization was looking to make a donation.  Mr. Gagne referred Mr. Ouellette to the Youth Commission.  Mr. Ouellette, along with other members, participate in fundraisers to raise money for church affiliated groups and educational needs. 

Mr. Ouellette reported that four times a year, Saint Jean the Baptist Service Organization would match donations collected by fundraisers, etc.  Kevin expressed heartfelt thanks that the Youth Commission Gift Account was the recipient of this generous donation.   

A picture of Mr. and Mrs. Ouellette, MaryAnn Ferreira and Youth Commission members was taken to be submitted to The Chronicle.

Review Budget Accounts:  

There were no comments at this time.

New Business from the floor:  

·        Kevin reported to Commissioners that his new cell phone number is:  508-326-3222.    

·        Kevin stated that Michael Gagne informed him that he is trying to find another town vehicle for him.  Kevin’s town vehicle will shortly be out of commission.    

·        Valerie proposed holding the next Youth Commission meeting in December.  This will give Valerie, Tony and Kevin time to put together the final mailing list and letter for the Alvin Glaser Memorial Family Assistance Fund.  This was agreed upon by Commissioners.    

Youth Advocate’s Report:    

·        Kevin’s report was moved to the end of the agenda due to the presentation of the check from Mr. Ouellette.    

·        Kevin reported that he has approximately 17 student trainees that will meet tomorrow to become student interns for the Banana Splits groups.    

·        Kevin has been meeting with clients on an individual basis for counseling.  He also continues to make his daily visits to Dartmouth High School where he also meets with clients.    

The next meeting of the Dartmouth Youth Commission is scheduled for Wednesday, December 3, 2003 in Room 314 of the Dartmouth Town Hall at 7:00 p.m.
