Youth Commission Minutes 05/08/2002
WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2002  
DARTMOUTH TOWN HALL, ROOM 318, 7:00 P.M.    

PRESENT:      Christian Broughton, Chairman; Gale Schultz; Deborah Smith; Lorraine   

                        Gagne; Bruce Lider; Debra Brejcha; Kevin Lee, Youth Advocate; and  

                        Justine Clarke, clerk    

REGRETS:   Paul Foucart, Alison Nastanski  

            Chairman Christian Broughton called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m.    

            Ms. Smith stated that the Minutes of April 10, 2002 had her name and Ms. Brejcha’s names spelled incorrectly.  She also noted that the word leagues (paragraph 2) and the word are (paragraph 7) were spelled incorrectly on Page Two.    

Approval of April 10, 2002 Minutes:  Mr. Lider made a motion to accept the minutes of April 10, 2002.  Ms. Brejcha seconded the motion.  Voted unanimously.    

Old Business:    

Discuss Mr. Lee’s annual evaluation:    

·                    Mr. Broughton distributed the completed Performance Appraisal results and comments for Mr. Lee’s annual evaluation.  Mr. Lee and the Commissioners spent approximately 10 minutes perusing the results.  Mr. Broughton explained that the comments in italics were from Mr. Gagne, Executive Administrator.      

·                    Mr. Lee thanked Mr. Broughton for compiling all the results and presenting them in a well-organized document.  He stated that he would like to review the results and comments in further detail, and discuss them at next month’s meeting.    

·                    Ms. Schultz also commented that Mr. Broughton did a terrific job.  The Commissioners and Mr. Lee will review the results and discuss them at the next scheduled meeting.    

Update on potential Youth Commission Candidates:    

·                    Mr. Lee stated that Ms. Valerie Alves telephoned him and left him a lengthy message stating that she sent a letter expressing her interest to become a member of the Youth Commission, to the Select Board a few weeks ago and to date has not been contacted.

Old Business:

·                    Mr. Lee asked the Commissioners if they were willing to have their names and   

phone numbers on the home page of the Web site, in a password protected area.  The password will be given to the Commissioners allowing them to log onto the Web site if they need to get a phone number or address of another Commissioner.  The Commissioners gave their approval.    

·                    Mr. Lee mentioned that Brian Messier, our student Web developer, has been doing good work; if he is closely supervised.  He lives within walking distance to Kevin and some mornings, when Kevin is doing work from home, Brian will go to Kevin’s house and do his work there.    

·                    Mr. Lee stated that he and Justine Clarke, clerk, have been sending out letters to area  

businesses asking for monetary donations for DartmouthYouth.com.  He stated that today he received a check for $100.00 from Ms. Ronnie Glassman, of Glassman Real Estate.  

A list of area businesses the letter was mailed to was distributed to Commissioners.    

·                    Mr. Lee stated that during the past week he has received at least three phone messages from people who have visited DartmouthYouth.com Web site.    

·                    Mr. Lee stated that he recently spoke with a young lady from his Teen Group who has a friend who said she was pregnant, resulting from rape.  This teenager was visiting DartmouthYouth.com and found a link to a Web site that provided information about what teens should do in the event of a pregnancy, etc.      

·                    Mr. Lee granted permission to The United Way of Greater New Bedford ‘s Web site to link to DartmouthYouth.com.     

·                    To date, we have received $300.00 from area businesses for promotional items for DartmouthYouth.com.    

·                    Mr. Lee is requesting that the Commissioners allow him to order promotional items from Diversified Marketing Group as soon as he has received the allotted money.  The Commissioners gave permission.    

·                    Mr. Lee stated that he recently received DYAA’s schedule and it will be posted on the Web site.    

Old Business from floor:    

·                    There was no old business at this time.

Youth Advocate’s Report:    

·                    Mr. Lee stated that he is in the process of building a new client database using Microsoft Access.  Brian Britton, from the treasurer’s office, has been providing the actual technical skills, with assistance from Kevin.  Once this is complete, Justine Clarke, clerk, will transfer over the client information, etc.    

New Business:    

Update on Finance Committee’s 2003 budget reductions:    

·                    Mr. Lee stated that he recently attended a mandatory budget report meeting.  The Youth   

Commission’s expenses were cut $340.00.    

New Business from the floor:    

·                    There was no new business at this time.    

·                    The next scheduled meeting of the Dartmouth Youth Commission is scheduled for Wednesday, June 12, 2002 in Room 318 at the Dartmouth Town Hall at 7:00 p.m.    

·                    Mr.  Lider made a motion to adjourn the meeting.  Ms. Brejcha seconded the motion.  Voted unanimously at 8:30 p.m.
