June is here and so, it appears, is summer.  Recent articles about the economy and vacation indicate that more people will be vacationing close to home.  So, what is there in Colchester for you and your friends to do this summer?
From CBA’s giant tag sale on the Green to the Historical Society’s Festival on the Green, Colchester Community Theater’s Children’s Production to concerts on the Green, Safety Day at Country Place to the third annual Tour de Trail and the 57 Fest – there’s something in Colchester for everyone.  Check out the “Colchester Connection” – the first cooperative publication of eight Town departments outlining over one hundred activities sponsored by Town departments during Summer 2009.
While you’re at it, check out Colchester’s many farms and farms stands – fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, wine, eggs, and much more can be found grown right here.  Watch our website later in June for a listing of the many farms, produce sold at retail, hours, and locations.  What a great place to bring your children to see from where food really comes and to talk to local farmers about their jobs and the difference they make to all of us.
Still not busy enough?  Colchester Fire Department is in the process of developing their strategic plan.  We need a couple of citizens who are interested in learning more about the fire department and helping to plan for its future.
Interested in outdoor activities?  The airline trail provides almost seven miles of hiking and biking in Colchester.  Run through the spray park at the Recreation Complex or visit the skate park and playgrounds.  Ruby and Elizabeth Cohen Woodlands provides a quiet environment for hiking, bird watching, picnicking, and quiet reflection.  Day Pond and the Salmon River State Parks are wonderful areas to swim, hike, and fish.
Please keep safety in mind at all times.  Wear the proper protective gear for bike riding, skate boarding, and roller skating.  Keep an eye on your barbeque grills – don’t leave them unattended.  Use only starter fluids designed for the grill and, if using gas, make sure the hose connection is tight and hoses checked for leaks.  This coming weekend is a great opportunity for those cleaning up debris and unused items around the house – dispose of your hazardous household materials at William Johnston Middle School on Saturday, June 6th during our hazardous collection day.  Be aware during thunderstorms or lightening or the potential thereof and take appropriate shelter.   What do to in a tornado, severe weather alert, for heat exhaustion, pedestrian safety, water quality -- all of these tips and more can be found in the “Colchester Connection.”
Colchester is a wonderful place to be no matter the season and a great place in the summer.  Have a wonderful summer.
