Colchester Shines During Holidays

With the holidays upon us, I thought I would take a moment to pause and reflect upon some of the great things I witness as First Selectman in this community. I perhaps have a perspective that many don’t. As First Selectman, I have the opportunity to see much of what our community does during this season, and it has affected me deeply.

I have been able to witness community organizations raising money for charity, businesses donating to the food bank, and citizens giving their time and money to help those in need. It seems that every day there is another toy drive, food collection, or fundraiser to help those who are less fortunate.

The unbridled selflessness of this community astounds me every day. I have never seen a collection of people willing to give so much of themselves. What’s even more remarkable is that many aren’t even asked to help, they just do it. The spirit of the holidays is truly alive and well in Colchester.

Many people have often joked (but with a serious undertone) that they think I’m crazy to volunteer for the problems that inevitably make it to my office. And it’s true that sometimes I struggle with issues and decisions. However, if I wasn’t in this position, I would be missing out on one of the greatest sights anyone could ever witness, our community in action.

At its simplest level, a town is nothing more than roads, buildings, and employees to provide services to the public. Colchester is so much more than just a town though, we’re a community. And it’s not easy to become a true community. You have to want to serve others, sacrifice for the greater good, and ensure that all have the opportunity to succeed. After two years as First Selectman, I can not fully describe the sense of pride I feel on a daily basis by being part of this community.

Although these observations are brought about by the holidays, I would be remiss if I did not point out that these generosities occur year round in Colchester. The passion and dedication of our citizens and our children is something we should all view with pride and admiration.

We should take a moment to congratulate ourselves. No government can build a community as tremendous as Colchester. It comes from the hard work, dedication, and passion of citizens who want to create something special. This holiday season, I hope you will join me in celebrating all that we have built here and recommit ourselves to ensuring it always remains a shining example of what a true community should be.

May you all have a good holiday season and a happy New Year!
