Summer Activities

As we move into summer, there are lots of activities going on that residents can take part in. One of the most exciting to me is the launch of a farmer’s market every Sunday morning at the Polish Club. The market brings together local farmers with fresh produce. If you haven’t been able to make it there yet, I strongly recommend you check it out. Local farmers are a key component of our society and critical to preserving our way of life in Colchester. Remember, no farms, no food.

Another activity many people may not be aware of is the town recreational facilities. The Recreation Complex on Old Hebron Road has a spray park, tennis courts, playscape, pavilion, and walking paths. Please contact the Parks and Recreation Department for information on these or any other facility. It’s a great place to bring your kids so they can enjoy the summer days.

Down the road from the Recreation Complex is another hidden gem. In addition to a golf course, we also have a driving range and a mini-golf course. These are private businesses and are a great place to spend some time or an afternoon. A quick trip with the kids to play mini-golf can bring a smile to their face.

Finally, our annual Summer Concerts on the Green series starts up again on July 11. Every Sunday, weather permitting, come to the green at 5PM to hear some great music and enjoy the weather with the community. And please be sure to thank Rockville Bank and the other major sponsors for allowing Colchester to put these concerts on at no cost to the taxpayer.

Emergency Notification System Launched

Connecticut has recently launched a new emergency notification system for residents. This is a great system that can be rapidly activated to let all residents or residents in a specific location receive notifications of an emergency and instructions on what to do. The system acts like 911 in reverse. A message is placed on the system and is automatically sent out to all the traditional land based phone lines on record with the phone company.

One major issue with this system though is the widespread use of cell phones. Many of these phone numbers are not in the system and may not be included. This is why I am encouraging everyone to go to the website www.ctalert.gov and sign up yourself and your business. The motto of the website is “We can’t alert you…if we can’t reach you” and it’s very true. Again, please go to this site and sign yourself up. It will only take a few minutes and could help you one day.
